The Iowa board of control appointed Dr. John J. Prusmack of Clarinda state hospital as acting superintendent of that institution after the death of Dr. RoP D. Smith, who led the hospital until his death Friday.
The Webster County Republican central committee charges that general election votes were cast under names of persons long dead or no longer residents of Fort Dodge and petitions the city council to revise local registration files.
About 15 infantile paralysis cases are under care by Wapello County physicians led by Dr. Donald Mecbiderry. The latest patient is Donald Wood, 17. None of the cases require an iron lung as they are non respiratory. Mrs. Sarah Seidenfeld, 80, is granted a divorce from Abram Seidentfeld in district court after he failed to contest.
John and Warren Griffith received one year in jail for stealing farm equipment and supplies from neighbors near Shambaugh and Braddyville. John served a year while Warren's sentence was suspended and he was paroled for admitting thefts from the Ed Fulk and Douw Griffith farms, including harness gear and grease guns.
Des Moines drum and bugle corps took first in the junior division scoring 94.2 at the state American Legion contest held at the fair grounds. Monahan post of Sioux City was second with 84.6. In the senior division Dubuque won with 90 and Waterloo was runner up with 89.4.
An Iowa legislative interim committee earmarked 5500 for the state’s portion of buying the 100 year old Iowa City home of former Gov Robert B Lucas. The conservation commission will receive the funds if the Lucas association raises 1500 and covers future upkeep. Lucas was Iowa’s first territorial governor from Isak to 1941.
Douglas Charles Fisk, 16, son of a tenant farmer from Hunter North Dakota, won the North Central regional public speaking contest of the Future Farmers of America at Drake University lounge. Stanley Jepson 18 Renville Mint took second and Dewey Condit 18 Cenutertown Ky earned third.
Ottumwa player Luther Sammons captured first in the Iowa state fair checker tournament. Peoria’s Bobby Martin, last year’s winner, did not compete. Louis Kaiman of Glenwood, a Nebraskan ranking player new to Iowa, finished second.

The Agricultural Adjustment Administration outlines three county option provisions for soil conservation in 1941. These include five year conservation plans with deductions for noncompliance, minimum erosion resisting crop acreage with deductions, and enhanced payment percentages for special acreage allotments. Small farm operators receive added incentives including a guaranteed minimum payment and forest planting benefits.
British and German actions dominate the day as 24 German planes were destroyed and bombing raids continued on England. Canadian Prime Minister J N Ralston forecast Britain would go on the offensive with Canada’s overseas force in the thick of the fight. Talks in Vienna aimed to keep the Balkans quiet while Germany and Italy press their campaign against Britain.
Venita DeWitt a 15 year old Dickinson county farm girl won the 1940 4 H club girls health contest in the finals at the state fair. Pauline Marxen a 16 year old from Winterset took second place.
A 1941 program update sets a special $15 allowance for forest tree planting on farms as part of soil-building efforts, replacing the $30 1940 rate. The change reflects budgeting and administrative practicality and allows the full soil-building allowance to be earned through forest planting. In designated areas, farms with at least half crop and orchard land in perennial legumes or grasses may receive up to $50 or half the soil-building allowance for locally adapted practices as determined by local committees.
Wilbert TH Graber and Evalyn Graber of Wayland purchase the Pleasant Inn from Mrs Wanda Bowden and take possession. The eatery will be named Purple Row Lunch Room and continue home cooked meals at current prices with a plate lunch at noon and varied dinner and short orders. Chicken will be offered once weekly. Graber plans to redecorate and hang a new sign. Graber and Miss Graber recently returned from Wisconsin where she was on vacation. Mrs Bowden started the Inn August 26 1935 and relinquished ownership August 27 1940.
Mrs. Mildred Norman returned Monday to her duties as deputy county auditor after a week’s vacation, resuming her responsibilities and routine tasks at the county office.
Frank C. Walker 54 a New York corporation attorney and longtime ally of President Roosevelt is slated to succeed James A Farley as postmaster general.
The Washington board of education announces two new instructors for the upcoming school year. Martha Decker of Callao Mo will replace Grace Fern as kindergarten teacher, and Dale Perkins of Goodland Kansas, 36, will teach commercial subjects at the high school, succeeding Ralph Le Moine.
Radda of Washington wins the WHO sponsored tall corn contest at the state fair with a 19 ft 54 in stalk setting a new record and earning 100 dollars a J wb Palmer gold trophy and a tractor plow. Jesse Radda also nets five dollars in the contest. Other notes include Col Norman Ram sey offering to route Legion inquiries to Washington and a separate call for an arsenal probe.
The Washington band left early this morning for Des Moines to participate in the musical program at the state fair. The group has been invited for several years to support the fair’s concerts and contributes to the annual program.

President Roosevelt signed a bill authorizing mobilization of National Guard and army reserves totaling 408000 for a year of training. Iowa plans mobilization of 4779 guardsmen with 260 officers and multiple regiments to training camps in Texas or Louisiana.
