North Carolina may face worst natural gas shortage this winter

Federal Energy Administration experts warn that the United States could see a record natural gas shortage this winter with demand outstripping supply by about 15 percent. Grand jury begins probe into Smithburg shooting death

Newlywed refugees find home in Washington from Ft Chaffee

Vietnamese couple Thach and Loan arrived in Washington sponsored by Kawara Bean family after fleeing Saigon on April 28 29. Thach 23 and Loan 18 wed Saturday and plan to work while awaiting final relocation. Loan’s family stayed at Ft Chaffee Ark awaiting UMC sponsorship. Journey included perilous river evacuations and crowded ships to Subic Bay and Wake Island before reaching the United States.

Floods Hit Des Moines Area With Heavy Rain

Des Moines and surrounding areas faced renewed flooding as a late morning storm dumped up to six inches of rain, alarming officials but with no reported injuries or evacuations. Walnut Creek overflowed in Dallas County prompting evacuations, while roads flooded but activity remained limited as water began to recede.

Jaycees Agree to Telethon Pledges for Muscular Dystrophy

The Washington Jaycees will run a Labor Day pledge center to support the Jerry Lewis Telethon benefiting Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America. Telethon coverage by WMT Cedar Rapids begins August 31 and continues through September 1. Donations can be made by phone via the WMT airing number or in person at Burt's Appliance in Washington.
