In Norton Canes England Albert Longmore 21 while serving heard a sergeant command jump and awoke at home to leap through his bedroom window landing on the concrete path below. He suffered a sprained wrist in the fall.
Iowa officials led by State Safety Commissioner Clinton Moyer approve a six point plan to curb drunken driving. The drive targets adults who supply alcohol to teens and those who sell to minors, with strict local enforcement and immediate effects on deaths. The plan urges rapid court reporting and maximum use of county prosecutors to pursue drunken driving convictions.
Mrs Joanna Burkley 8 died at 4 15 pm Sunday in a Washington rest home after years of illness. Funeral services set for 10 am Tuesday at Kalona Methodist Church Rev Dendy Garrett presiding. Burial in Sharon Hill Cemetery. Born Feb 9 1874 in Johnson County to John and Barbara Sommers. Widow of John Burkley. Survived by son John and daughter Mrs Barbara Small, both of Kalona.
In Des Moines AP reports twenty one people arrested in a vice and liquor raid on the Paradise Club early Sunday. Fourteen officers seized 39 bottles of liquor as patrons gathered for a dancer. Patrons threw bricks, two men fled through a coal chute, no injuries but near misses noted. Owner Orville Leon Cox pleaded innocent to operating a dis orderly place of business and posted $700 bond for a Sept 4 hearing. Additional charges included drunkenness and resorting to a dis orderly place of business.
Ed Hegelbach began work this morning as manager of the meat department at Benner Food Store. He succeeds Bruce Curless who resigned for a California position. Ed and his wife, newly arrived from Galesburg, Illinois, seek a furnished apartment. Ed’s hobbies run along the line of sports.
Archie Clark 22 of Waterloo is in critical condition at Allen Memorial Hospital with a severe left abdomen knife wound. Duane Burkett 21, a neighbor, is in custody after admitting the stabbing during a Saturday night argument on a residential street.
Harlan Neuhart returns from Northwestern Military and Naval Academy Red Cross Aquatic School at Lake Geneva to teach skills to Washington County Chapter. New Water Safety Instructors Juhia Carson and Nancy Loveless completed Standard First Aid and aim to add skills to future nursing training.
Mrs Etha L White 73 died at 6 am today at her daughter s home in Green Bay Wis after a lingering illness. Funeral services at Jones Funeral Home 10 30 am Thursday with Dr R W Thompson in charge. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery. She was born Oct 1 188? in Washington the daughter of Joseph and Anna Eckels Purvis. She taught locally and was married here to Samuel H White who died in 1948. Surviving daughters and sisters listed.
R. M. Spike Evans Democratic senatorial candidate will address a countywide Democratic dinner at the High School on September 6. Tickets are on sale from committee chairs Alex Gevock and Doyle Gray. Evans, a Cedar Rapids native and Iowa State College graduate, has a long farm background and notable roles in AAA programs and federal agriculture service.
President Eisenhower plans to launch a major attack on the Democrats around September 15 after a pause for conferences with GOP leaders. He will start near Washington then visit Gettysburg and return to California for campaign events as Russia tests a weapon in southwest Siberia. Hagerty says details are guarded while urging international control of atomic energy.
Six were killed in weekend crashes in Iowa including Warren R Marpe, county attorney of Lamoni, who died after a three car wreck near Clarinda. George Abbott 27 of Iowa City died in a Muscatine city jail cell after a blanket he was wrapped in caught fire. Marshal Ernest Petersen reported Abbott appeared to sleep, then the blanket burned and he was found dead about 2:45 am Sunday. a lighted cigarette is suspected. No inquest planned.
In Santa Monica California workmen excavated tons of earth at a cliff edge overlooking the Pacific to reach possible victims of a landslide that swept four women from a picnic atop the bluff. The four, all from Los Angeles, included Lucille Glenn and Maude Hankerson with spinal fractures. Eugenie Baughman escaped severe injury. A parked car and its occupants were reportedly buried in debris, while motorist Bobby Sullivan narrowly avoided being buried.
Springfield UP Edward A. Hintz pled innocent to state conspiracy to defraud charges connected with the Orville E. Hodge scandal. He will begin a three year federal sentence Friday for related Chicago cases. Edward A. Epping arraignment set. three East St. Louis men to be questioned by Sangamon grand jury.
Two semi-trailer trucks side swiped on the English River bridge near junction of highways 218 and 22 at 3 a.m. Both overturned and blocked highway 218 for hours while crews cleared the scene. The Brady Motor Frate truck driven by Gerald Ray Payne of St Louis and a Gate Way Transportation Co. truck driven by Wilfred Haworth of Cedar Rapids were involved. Payne and passenger Lewis Tartt, both of St Louis, suffered severe burns and were hospitalized. The Gateway vehicle carried merchandise. the Brady truck carried farm machinery destroyed by fire.
Final rites for Mrs. Kenneth Dayton were held today in Muscatine where she had lived since her husband died in California about a year ago. The Dayton family is well known in Washington.
Italian press reports Ezio Pinza 64 a famed bass and former Met star canceled all engagements after a mild heart attack suffered Friday in Milano Marittimo. Doctors said he had nearly recovered and could return home soon. Pinza’s wife Doris denied a stroke claim and noted a hip injury from a bath fall.

Minnie L. Downey born July 15 1882 near Richland daughter of John and Lydia Snider. She married Dave Downey in 1905, he died in 1944. She survived by one son Sedrick of Sigourney four grandchildren and three sisters all of Richland. Burial arrangements by Gould General Home.
In Louisa Virginia authorities link carbon monoxide to the deaths of two Ottumwa Iowa children Beverly Marie five and Gary Warren Baugh seven in a car. Nine other passengers from Ottumwa were affected with several treated and released. The father Mack Baugh 44 and two other relatives were not seriously harmed.
Ralph Joy 42 traffic manager for regional telephone firms died after a heart attack. A New London Methodist Church service is set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. with burial in New London Cemetery. Elliot Funeral Home handles arrangements. he is survived by wife Ina Owens and two sons Billy and Duane, plus two brothers and his parents.
Washington County 4H boys excel in the Iowa State Fair market swine division in Des Moines. Bill Durian won champion Duroc barrow and placed second in the Duroc pen. Ken Greiner claimed champion Hampshire barrow and reserve, plus champion Hampshire pen. Keith Horn earned blue ribbons on his Duroc barrow and pen and on his Poland China entries. The county will be represented at livestock judging by Keith Horn, Larry Shalla, Dick Stewart, and Ken Greiner.
