Grocer Henry Topoll said he has identified the thief who stole 75 loaves of bread from his Kalamazoo groceries over six months. He woke Friday to see a bloodhound sniffing around the shop then the dog cornered and the thief fled with the loot from the white bread rack.
Mike De Long and his two younger brothers enjoy a homemade giraffe shaped slide in their backyard. The slide, built by their father Gerald from lumber from his yard, draws neighbors and offers a toy pride for Dad and kids.
Artemas Brown, secretary of the Washington YMCA, will speak at the Sunday evening worship in Central Park with Rev Basil McBee presiding. Mrs Brown will be the pianist and Ruth Ann Brown the soloist. If rain occurs the service moves to the Methodist church.
Gates to the Iowa State Fairgrounds opened with Children's Day offering free admission to under 16. The 101st exposition began as hot dry weather with near 100 degrees forecast. Entries rose in 4-H baby beef to 676 from 523 last year as attendance reached 8,850 on Friday despite last year's 9,750.
Former Nationalist general Yu Ching Man was killed in a 20 minute gun battle when three masked men attempted to kidnap him in Hong Kong. Police found Yu and one kidnapper dead after the assault. Yu, who fled to Hong Kong after escapes in Burma, had fought Japanese forces and later toiled as Li Mi’s aide in the civil war.
Davenport 18 year old Richard Carlson was to be arraigned on a charge of stealing more than 3000 dollars worth of jewelry from a Davenport store. Police said he took uncut diamonds and watches over four months and he remained in jail in lieu of bond.
Police search Mattoon Illinois press for a mustachioed long sideburned youth believed to have killed 14 year old Doris Edwards daughter of a church custodian. Neighbors reported a tall thin man with sideburns and mustache drove up to the Edwards home and shots were fired. Doris body found behind the house and a bullet lodged in living room woodwork.
In Geneva secret talks, top atomic scientists from the United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, France plus Canada and Czechoslovakia announced a useful exchange of nuclear information. They met behind guarded doors to discuss safeguarding peaceful atomic uses and preventing diversion of materials as part of the proposed international atomic pool. The communique noted progress on diversion problems for fuel used in atoms for peace.
Milwaukee center announces two sisters Mrs. John Quarles and Mrs. Katherine Brown are the only known cases of a rare U negative and Rh negative blood combination. The finding followed the death of Quarles' fifth child and involved serum tests at the Lister Institute.
A group of nine freshmen boys and their parents attended a Washington High vocational agriculture meeting led by instructor Verne Knecht. Principal Carl Paetz welcomed attendees and highlighted opportunities, while Rodney Letts of FFA spoke on activities. Knecht presented project slides and refreshments were provided by the FFA chapter.
Detroit DETROIT UP Chrysler Corp and CIO United Auto Workers Union began weekend talks as the union threatens a 139 000 strike at midnight Wednesday if no new contract averts it. Chrysler says its proposal is liberal and aligns with industry patterns.

Havre residents Mr and Mrs Henry Lunning brought a giant yellow freestone peach to the Journal office. The fruit measured 11 inches in circumference and came from Mrs Lunnings father John Baer on East Washington Street. Baer is eight years old and moved to Washington in 1938.
In Morecambe a pressurized cockpit canopy blew off Wing Cmdr. Roland Beaumont during a top secret P1 fighter test over northeast Lancashire. Beaumont, a World War II ace, survived the dive at supersonic speed, though his helmet was torn from his head and debris damaged a sidewalk and buried helmet in a garden.
Four youths aged 15 to 18 were seized after a week of white masked prowling in Davenport. They admitted they planned only to scare neckers in the park and have fun, denying Klan links, and were ordered to see a probation officer next week.
French forces encircled Berber tribes in central Morocco demanding surrender. Gen. Andre Franchi announced harsh terms while using Vampire jets tanks and artillery to compel the remaining 25 000 Smaala tribesmen to surrender. Over four days more than 700 insurgents were killed in punitive operations raising fatalities past 2000.
Mrs. Robette Morgan, 35, wife of a nine year veteran on the local police force, was fined $1,000 and given a six month suspended sentence for soliciting for the purpose of prostitution. Her husband William Morgan, 39, resigned from the force as officials rescinded an earlier dismissal. Kathryn Cole, 42, Des Moines, also faced charges and pled guilty to soliciting with a $500 fine and six month suspended sentence.
