Earl Gustafson 50, an unmarried farmer four miles northwest of Munterville, died Wednesday when his tractor rolled over along the roadside. Neighbors who searched for him found his body after he failed to return home.
Mike Neuroth about 65 of Beresford S D died Wednesday evening when the pickup truck he drove was hit by a Milwaukee railroad passenger train at a crossing north of Hawarden. His son Jene rode with him and was treated for shock. The truck was demolished and the wreckage dragged about 100 feet.
Sioux City reports farmer John Eiden Feldt, 66, accused of illegally possessing 35 dressed pheasants. The charge is filed by state conservation officer W. W. Trusell. A hearing is scheduled for Saturday.
Evanston cadet Tom Tavage of the pre flight school caused a buzz in Iowa City as reports say he devoured 14 pork chops with all the trimmings at a recent meal. Cooks may be in a frenzy if his appetite continues.
Seaman first class Stewart Bell 22 son of J Russell and Mrs Bell of 121 North Avenue Washington Town will sing weekly on the Great Lakes choir radio show Meet Your Navy during boot training. The choir changes as recruits finish training and are reassigned. Chaplin Hanson directs the 200 voice group. The program features the choir rhythm orchestra military band and recruits and is broadcast coast to coast via short wave Fridays at nine.
Supt B A Ralston outlines goals for Washington Independent schools marking the opening of the new year on Monday August 31. He praises the staff and students, urges home and school cooperation, and emphasizes education as a foundation for democracy and wartime effort.
Jack Stilwill announces the program as Al Boyd produces it for the network.
Judge Bechly of Montezuma attended to routine matters as the March term of district court completed its spring session. The term adjourned with work finished and a new term set to open September 14 under Judge J G Patterson of Oskaloosa. Harry Rath of Montezuma accompanied Judge Bechly to Washington.
Civil Aeronautics Administration examinations will be given at 6:30 this evening in the high school building. Kenneth Freeman will oversee the tests. Reported, none of the students in the next flight program will request glider pilot training.
The opening ceremonies for the billion dollar bond drive are set for 9:00 P M Tuesday September 1 at the State theater. A brief program titled Salute to Our Heroes will be held and bond sales for the day announced. Anyone buying a war bond at the theater on that first day will receive a free theater ticket usable at the State or Fox theaters.
Coastal observers reported a large RAF sweep over northern France with many fighters diving on a German convoy off Dieppe harbor. Hurricanes heavily damaged three Nazi ships, a smaller vessel also hit, while Spitfire escorts protected the raid and all British planes returned safely.
A special election in Harper Iowa granted a renewal of the Iowa Southern Utilities franchise for 295 years by a 109 to 1 vote. Local manager L B Dempsey of Keota led the district. The vote mirrors Crawfordsville last year and follows a pattern of renewals across the Washington district towns including Washington Columbus Junction Wayland Richland Brighton Ollie Packwood Ainsworth Crawfordsville West Chester Columbus City Letts Grandview.
County Farm Bureau president Manford Rabenold and delegates from Des Moines met to discuss the annual meeting war effort and price ceilings on livestock. They argued that live animal ceilings would squeeze small packers while letting large packers profit more, influencing prices and profits across the industry.
A Des Moines official reports Washington county has not met its war bonds and stamps sales quota through August 1. The year quota was 1 620 000 while seven month sales reached 789 540 81, about 155 459 19 short. Pledged support was only 60 percent of the quota, signaling a need for a stronger fall campaign to urge heavier investment in the war effort.
Rev. William B. Milne, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Muscatine, Iowa, for eight years, died following an operation for appendicitis.
Pvt. Robert C. Keagy is stationed with the quartermaster company at Camp Carson Colorado after a transfer from Camp Wolters Texas.
Farm Bur warns that fixing ceiling prices on live stock will benefit only packers and not reduce meat costs for consumers, urging farm people to protest the policy.
Washington county men who went to Des Moines for induction yesterday have not yet received travel orders. Early next week they may depart after a home furlough, with plans for departure details to follow. Most are not headed for Jefferson Barracks and may return to Camp Dodge for processing before active service. Forty five of the 65 who left yesterday returned last night. some began service, others were held for further exam. The board has not yet reported on physicals.
The 4 H club health improvement contest began in the basement of the Methodist church under Dr Ruth Church director of the Washington county health unit. About 25 members were checked this morning and county agent Jo W Chandler expects around 100 boys and girls to be examined today and tomorrow. The event measures health gains by contestants from last year. Newly examined members are not eligible for honors this year.
The battleship Iowa, 45000 tons, was launched seven months ahead of schedule at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Assistant Secretary Ralph A Bard hailed its speed and range as superior to German and Japanese ships. Mrs Ilo Browne Wallace christened the vessel as about 10 000 workers and guests looked on.
A federal judge issued a temporary injunction blocking Kaiser Company Inc of Oakland from continuing alleged steel black market operations. The order, directed to the Office of Price Administration, follows a prior injunction against Peter Markle of Houston and a simultaneous order against Builders Structural Steel Co of Cleveland.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Durst of Washington report four sons in the U S navy. Everett serves seven years as a petty officer and first class electrician. Lloyd enlisted last February as a first class carpenter's mate. Charles and Fred enlisted July 13 and returned to the Great Lakes naval training school after a nine day home furlough. Charles becomes a gunner and Fred a musician.
