Charles Batonner of Detroit was elected commander of the United States Blind Veterans of World War II at the Muscatine meeting. Olga Lichenberg of Fond du Lac becomes second junior vice commander, the first woman in the post.

Sale of the Critz estate farm near Riverside on Wednesday sold parcels including a 20 acre timber tract to Joel V. Horak Kalona Iowa at 876 per acre a 40 acre farm to Edward U Be ranek Kalona Iowa at 100 per acre a 30 acre farm to Carl Kos Kalona Iowa at 75 per acre and a 23 acre farm and bottom land to Anthony Milicky Richmond Iowa at 50 per acre with cash down and possession set for March 1928. A second auction for 160 acres with improvements will be held September 24 at 2 p m with the total offered then. The Riverside Leader building at Riverside will be auctioned September 24 1927 at 10 a m.
J. J. Clark formerly of this place died in a Detroit hospital on August 24. He worked for J. A. Harwood and Son Shoe Store for years and is survived by his wife and a son, F Clark, of town City. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
A community canvass for 1928 Chautauqua season tickets continues with a goal of 1,000 pledges as the Washington assembly nears. As of yesterday 735 pledges were recorded, with committee members led by Miss Anna Dawson working to reach more buyers, including many younger residents. The 24 year old movement remains optimistic despite weather and logistics, aiming to fund a full program for next summer.
In Des Moines on August 26 the government strengthened its case against Vernon U. Sigler and seven others over an alleged illegal stock sale. A. B. Mehaffey testified he spoke with Sigler before buying $500 in the Farmers Fund of Illinois, contradicting Sigler’s claim of no real involvement. Mehaffey said Sigler appeared favorable and claimed to be president, while Claude Porter sought to shape Mehaffey’s testimony. The defense failed to discredit Mehaffey’s motive, and court actions were set to continue.
Hoy Miller arrested Tuesday evening on stealing chickens waived preliminary hearing before Justice J W Patton this morning and was bound over to the grand jury under bonds of 1 00. The report notes more than forty five percent of Holland windmills removed since 1924.
The Washington chautauqua tent is moved to the Dutch Creek fair grounds for afternoon and evening programs next Thursday September 1. Plans advance this week with grounds improvements and road work for the fourth annual fair. Rev C W Klein of Moline HS, former Valley church pastor, assists with arrangements and will stay through the fair.
The Rock Island lines will host a retirement banquet in the Stevens Hotel ballroom Chicago for the honor roll of retired employees who served fifty years. Mr and Mrs Lisle McGuein and Mr and Mrs John Pergquists will attend as part of the honored group.
A walnut tree trunk from Kentucky with a diameter of about one foot was sold for $625. The buyer paid cash at the auction, and the seller noted the timber’s quality and potential use in a crafts project.
W. W. Morrison, a Harwood store shoemaker, marks his 77th birthday while continuing more than fifty years of work. Born in Possum Hollow Tennessee, he trained near Greenville and earned five dollars a month as an apprentice. He has spent fourteen years at the Harwood store and is likely the oldest active shoemaker in Iowa.
Preston Wolf of the Wolf Floral company displayed a cattelya orchid to Journal force members. The plant, rare to Iowa prairies, bloomed fully and is delicate in form. Wolf bought it from New Jersey last May for 10 dollars plus 2.50 shipping and plans few orders, keeping it for personal desire. The orchid naturally grows in swamps of South America and Africa as a parasite in tree forks.
Walter Williams has moved his shoe shining parlor and pantitorium to rooms one door south of his former location on North Iowa Avenue, in the former Gosramer tailor shop. The old Williams space will host a barber shop, and Patrick Henry is said to have taught Thomas Jefferson violin.
