Governor Robert Brodnax Glenn of North Carolina emerged as a state rights advocate in the clash over the new railway rate law with the federal judiciary. Elected executive in 1904, his term ends in 1900. Born 1854 in Rockingham County, he studied at local schools, Davidson College, UVA, and Pearson's Law School. Married Nina Deaderick in Knoxville in 1878 and began practicing law in Winston, N Y. He served in the legislature, as state solicitor, and as U S district attorney under Cleveland’s second term.
Prince Wilhelm of Sweden visited Newport Aug 26 attending a luncheon hosted by Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish and later went to Warwick Neck for a reception with Senator Aldrich. He planned to travel to Worcester by special train and attended services at the Swedish Methodist Episcopal church, expressing pride in Swedish loyalty to the fatherland. A dinner aboard the Fylgia honored hosts, but a rainstorm canceled the post dinner reception and dance.

Miss Mary VP Root of Bristol Connecticut dies in Pittsfield Massachusetts at House of Mercy as the fourth fatality from the August 18 crash when a car crossed a railroad track ahead of an express train. Only one party member survives.
Miss Laura K. Sheehy of Pittsburgh was fatally burned at the Thurecht hotel on Riverway Niagara Falls while eating lunch in the summer garden when her dress caught fire from a lighted match thrown on the floor by a careless smoker.
The Ward Ames steamship was successfully launched at the Superior shipyards in Wisconsin. Duluth child Florence Draper christened the vessel, which measures 552 feet in length and 56 feet in beam.

In Winfield, 11 year old Charles Lawson son of Constable M. M. Lawson shot himself at home. He bade his mother goodbye then vanished. A later shot was heard and Mrs. Lawson found him with his head nearly blown off. No cause is known.
Memphis Tenn August 26 Hon F F Noel of Holmes county has been nominated for governor of Mississippi in the Democratic primary held last Thursday Earl Brewer his opponent conceded the nomination and asks all Democrats to support him in Mississippi.
Glasgow Thompson a 14 year old boot black in Kewanee inherits $30,000 from a Montana great-uncle who died recently. The Colchester native learned of the fortune while living in this city.
Ten killed and twenty five injured in a head-on crash between an express train from Bordeaux to Paris and a freight train at Coutras France. A misplaced switch caused the accident.
