In Highland Park neighbors witnessed a late night blaze that destroyed a temporary dwelling built by carpenter John Gibson. The small house valued at two to three hundred dollars burned rapidly with no occupants or insurance found. No alarm was sounded and investigators suspect arson as a possibility.
About 125 residents gathered last evening at the home of Mr and Mrs James Palmer east of the city for a United Presbyterian young people social. Music came from a quartet John Springer Delbert Montgomery Howard W Hamilton and Lloyd Latta with fine refreshments later in the evening. Col Scofield presided over a civil case Bull versus Hettefinger in which Bull sought sixty dollars for a lumber bill on Hotel Midland and Hettefinger claimed ninety dollars overpayment. Scofield denied both claims and taxed costs to the plaintiff.
While riding a horse near a colt, Hverette Shearer was kicked hard when the other horse became furious. The blow severely bruised and swollen his leg and caused him much pain.
According to the notice Hall's Catarrh Cure is offered as a cure for deafness caused by catarrh. The makers F J Cheney & Co of Toledo claim the condition stems from an inflamed mucous lining of the Eustachian tube and promise to pay one hundred dollars for any cured case that cannot be helped. Sold by all druggists at 75 cents.
Advertisement notes Shilohs Cure as a best cough remedy sold by Carris and Company through EOC. It warns a neglected cough is dangerous and urges stopping the cough at once.
Forecast for Iowa fair tonight and Thursday with warmer northwest regions. Entertainment notices include Imro Vox magic show in September with a strong European reputation, John Griffith Dust Company at The Grand Kansas City, and Lincoln J. Carter’s Defaulter at The Graham. Obituary reports Mrs. M. A. Waters of Coppock died August 24, services at her home and Shrock cemetery in Marion Two. Washington county tax books reveal several heavy payers with yearly dues over 500 dollars and one man paying 41380 including extra county business interests. A planned Friday game with Burlington is called off, while Sigourney and What Cheer teams travel for mound digs that yield nothing.
The Iowa Union Telephone Co has changed its name to the Iowa Telephone Co and absorbed new lines. The company reports prospering conditions and ongoing growth.
About twelve car loads of young people from Burlington picnicked at Coppock yesterday. Today Babcock and Stewart ship two car loads of fine hogs while Berdo and McCreery move three car loads of cattle. A list of local residents and visitors records travels to Columbus January races and Wayland day trips. Agent Linder resigns from Muscatine post with the O., Roi & Py to enter mercantile work.
