An 11 year old was caught by Patrolman Burnell Dillard after smelt were found in a police car, the First National Bank night deposit chute, and mail drops at several businesses in Los Altos. He disposed of the remaining catch.
Dames J. Mervey formerly of Webster Iowa will teach high school English and related work in Washington for the coming term. He holds a B A from Parsons College and studied in Paris and Iowa. He headed four schools in Iowa before joining Washington faculty. John Calkins formerly of West Chester will teach junior high mathematics and other subjects. He is a former president of the Washington County schoolmasters and has 18 years as superintendent and teacher at West Chester. He has a B A from Parsons College and an M A from the State University of Iowa.
Tehran reports say Iran's outlawed Tudeh Communist Party led a street campaign against the shah's government after Gen. Fazollah Zahedi toppled Mossadegh. Zahedi claimed the country is under control while police secure the nation and seek Fatemi, amid unrest and foreign calls for aid including Russia.
Walter Palmer of 633 West Jefferson reports custody of a young robin with white wing tips. He found it after it fell into a window casement and placed it in protective custody, citing his cat as a factor. Palmer notes repeated sightings and plans to release the bird in an open field once Mrs. Palmer sees it.
Herbert Swan about 21 of Wayland suffered head injuries when he fell from a truck while loading turkeys at a farm near Kalona at 1 a m today. He was working with Wayland men and was taken to Iowa City for medical care. His injuries were reported as critical.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. C R Reed in charge. Members of the D A W and Word Weavers attended as pallbearers included Foster Biekel Ben Bruns Marion George A E Atchison John Winga William Kyle Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Australia and New Zealand oppose India’s bid to have the Korean peace conference discussed by China and North Korea before final action. Sir Percy Spender warns against widening the split with the United States over India's membership, urging a peaceful, limited settlement without a public vote.
Ed Sorrell, proprietor, marks twenty years in business this week. Established in 1933 at 100 block East Second, it moved to North Iowa Avenue in 1937 and to 1007 West Madison in 1940. A new auto glass building was completed earlier this year, making the shop among the most modern in Southeast Iowa, with Willard Gray and Willis Fash as part of the staff.
Des Moines reports from the U S Weather Bureau state that dry conditions sped up Iowa corn maturation in the past week. The 1953 crop is slightly ahead of 1952 and well above average, with rainfall sufficient in some areas but moisture deficient in the south. About four-fifths have reached the roasting ear stage, plowing slowed by dry weather, and nearly 90 percent of soybeans show pods with prospects for a good crop.
Frank Soukup, 410 East Madison Street, a retired farmer, died at his home this afternoon at 1 15. He had been in ill health for some time and funeral arrangements were not yet set as of today.
Prestor Wolf was honored Monday with funeral services at 4 p.m. in the Presbyterian church. Rotary members attended. pallbearers included Vic and Ted Crone Al Baldrige Maynard and Jas Brown Dr M J Cruise Les Richer and Ted Brown. American Legion provided military rites with color guard and firing squad. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery with Jones funeral home in charge.
Chou En Lai called for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Korea in a Peiping radio broadcast. He urged that Red China and North Korea attend the Far Eastern conference and propose a round table format with non involved nations. He added that any conference decision requires unanimous agreement from both sides of the armistice before adoption.
Police in Hammond Indiana say a headless body pulled from Lake Michigan resembles Illinois Republican leader Clem Graver who vanished June 11. The corpse shows no bullet wounds. flesh was scraped from hands and feet and a silver chain is embedded in the neck. Authorities notified Chicago to verify the missing man long sought in one of the city’s largest manhunts.
UN Red Cross teams reported North Korea refused permission to visit Camp No 6 where 2400 Americans reportedly died from starvation and illness. General Jerram said prisoners offered no complaints and guards accompanied the visitors. he called the trip a qualified success with no confirmed Geneva Convention violations found.
The White House said President Eisenhower will meet Mexican President Cortinez on the Rio Grande to dedicate Falcon Dam on October 19. He will also speak in Kansas City on October 15 and New Orleans on October 17 tied to the dam trip and regional events.
Four Washington county youths from Riverside and Ainsworth reported to the KANT the ater building in Des Moines for induction into the armed forces. The inductees are Larry Keith Lukas sky, John Vernon Moss, Hubert Charles Rath Jr., and Quentin Arthur Jenkins.
President Eisenhower ordered an immediate ban on draft deferments for fatherhood effective today. All men 18 to 26 may only obtain a hardship deferment if their induction would cause extreme hardship. existing or pending fatherhood deferments are grandfathered. Officials warn calls may rise about 14,000 monthly with hardship exemptions expected to be scarce. With Iowa supplying one fifth of U S butter, the note adds economic context.

Boone hosts the first annual Iowa Farm Safety Day plowing contest with 11 district champions competing for a $400 prize and the Glenn Noller memorial trophy. About 10 000 spectators were expected as 3 000 farmers gathered at Harold and Anton Rosengren farms while exhibits and food stalls drew crowds.
Kenneth E. Snow of Washington was sentenced to three years in the men’s reformatory at Anamosa after pleading guilty to committing lascivious acts with a child under 16. Snow appeared before Judge J. G. Patterson in Oskaloosa, with an appeal bond set at 2509 dollars. Carris remains held on a $5000 bond in the county jail. Snow was taken to Anamosa today by Sheriff Charles Snyder.
Iowa farmers saw livestock returns per hundred dollars of feed costs at a 20 year low in 1952, the smallest since 1932. The report notes feed prices and market conditions reduced profitability compared with earlier decades.
Freshman vocational agriculture students and their parents met Monday evening in Washington high school. Principal Robert Everetts welcomed attendees. Vocational agriculture instructor Verne Knecht outlined the program and the Future Farmers of America. Colored slides of local FFA activities were shown, followed by a tour of the ag room and new farm shop. Refreshments were served.
London AP Sen. Bourke B. Hickenlooper said the United States should not rush to share atomic secrets with Allies just because Russia claims hydrogen bomb mastery. He noted the MacMahon law was amended to widen public disclosure but sees no proof of further changes needed.
Dr. Ralph Heeren of the Iowa Health Department predicted Iowa will have 600 to 700 polio cases this year, far below the 1952 record of 3,564. He said about half of each year's cases are reported by August end, with 300 cases by week’s end and 1,369 the previous year. last week 64 cases were reported, compared with 284 in 1952.

Mrs Julie Caldwell a 29 year old Omaha woman was killed and her husband slightly injured when their car left Highway 276 two miles north of Glenwood Iowa. Caldwell said he fell asleep at the wheel during a vacation trip to the Ozarks.
Des Moines Iowa forecast shows fair tonight and mostly sunny warm conditions on Wednesday with low 64 to 69 and high 90 to 95. Thursday also mostly fair and warm. Five day outlook calls for temperatures about 4 to 7 degrees above normal. normal highs 80 north 84 south. normal lows 86 north 60 south. Rainfall near .1 to .2 inch south and scattered.
