Alton banker and longtime lawyer Alton C. W. Pitts, 85, died from an infection after scratching a boil. He practiced banking for 43 years and is survived by five children. In Marshalltown, an ordinance requires trailer homes to be moved within three days, affecting about 25 to 30 units.
Waterloo reports a pedestrian fined $1.50 for walking against the lights in what is described as the first such prosecution. Peter Attaway, 49, Austinville, was arrested at a downtown intersection after refusing officers' orders to return to the curb.
Three year old Frances Lucifie Harman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harman, living near Lovilia, died in an Ottumwa clinic from complications after taking seventy pills Aug 11 without parental knowledge.
After 37 years of continuous service the clock at the Marshall county courthouse was stopped for cleaning and repair. The weights total about a ton and a half. The mechanism remained in perfect order aside from a cracked glass and minor repairs.
Iowa City rider Friday Greenstate aged 21 captured third in a national 25 mile motorcycle event in Springfield Illinois. He also won the Iowa Tourist Trophy at Newton and the Gypsy Tour at Clear Lake in July, earning high marks in local racing circles. The Tourist Trophy tests speed and skill over wet grass, creeks, sand, and hills. The Gypsy Tour combines varied events and is decided by points.
Newton David Robert Laskewitz sixteen month old son of Mr and Mrs August Laskewitz farmers near Reanor died at Skige hospital after drinking gasoline. Mother left gasoline can by stove. Child picked up can and drank from spout. He died three hours later at hospital.
Iowa City Mayor Myron J. Walker names Harold J. Monk acting city engineer as Allen Walen fails to report for duty for a week. If no word from Walen by Friday his office will be declared vacant and a permanent appointment made.
Manchester Robert Stephenson, 18, was electrocuted when he slipped while working with his father Jack Stephenson Iowa Electric Co chief electrician. He fell across 220 volt wires at the top of a power line pole after making a connection.
Mayor William Guilfoyle accuses county officials of negligence after a slate tile fell from a second floor during repairs for the relief bureau injuring 29 year old newspaperman Max Namen. He cites lack of a city building department permit and failure to post warnings to protect pedestrians.
Final program of the 1937 Washington county 4-H achievement show in the Methodist church announces livestock and girls exhibit prizes. Awards include market litter pigs, purebred duroc, shropshire lambs, market lambs, best booth honors to Northwest Rangers, and state fair delegates for curtain and bag items among others.
William Walker and Mabel Finney of Washington township were named county health contest winners at the 1937 4-H achievement show. Walker, 17, and Finney, 15, will represent the county at the Iowa State Fair health contest. The pair, both born in Washington county hospital, excel in 4-H and school activities.

Lewis A. Warren of Washington Iowa was unanimously chosen today in Grand Rapids Michigan to serve as the International President of the Y's Men's Clubs. Warren, a former Washington club president and current international vice president, joins R H McCleery as the second Washington member to reach the role.
Street work under Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes began a new coat of hot asphaltic oil on crushed rock streets. A top surface was added on Weat Second Street and Avenues E and F, with East Third Street and other avenues and streets scheduled for sealing today. M Jaques of Trenton Missouri, representing a Kansas City firm, handles the application using a seal coat machine and sand layers for moisture protection.
President Roosevelt announced the signing of a bill for procedural reforms in the lower federal courts. He called it a moderate advance and noted it does not relieve Supreme Court burdens, nor bring new blood to the bench, and it leaves aging judges unaddressed. He also implied Supreme Court enlargement remains a live issue.

O J Derby 74 a farmer was killed when his car stalled on a grade crossing and was struck by a fast freight train at Wapello Iowa. The locomotive jumped the track after striking the car but no one on the train was injured.
