A column notes that rail travel in Iowa could use rubber tired wheels and flange wheels. Five Rock Island railroad officials visited Dysart recently to test a new sedan form. If satisfactory, the sedan may be adopted on regular lines with limited passenger service or patronage.
Sixteen rural schools in Buchanan County have shut down over the past five years due to dwindling enrollments. County superintendent Dayton H Winter cites smaller family sizes in the community as the main cause reflected in lower school attendance.
Cedar Falls Iowa State Teachers College debaters plan a Christmas trip to Canada to face teams from Ottawa Montreal and Quebec. Coach Dr F W Lamberton announced the excursion noting two prior trips to Mexico and Cuba by Tutor debaters.
Iowa farm homes show 15 percent connected to central station electric energy per the 1935 census, exceeding the national average of 11.6 percent. Harold Beaty of Iowa State College notes 32,916 farms use about 62 kilowatt hours monthly, with 5,898 customers to gain service under REA loan financed by 1.75 million dollars to Iowa co operatives, and over 1,715 miles of lines planned.
Vera Amis 26 of Greenville a former school teacher and topic of a statewide search for three weeks was found in Ruthven with amnesia. She had left her parents Mr and Mrs James Amis of Greenville bound for a church convention at Storm Lake and arrived in Ruthven two weeks ago claiming to be Gene Andrews an author from Davenport seeking a quiet place to write.
Five additional hearings on applications to operate transmission lines in Iowa were scheduled by the state board of railroad commissioners for Sept 15 in Des Moines. The cases include Iowa Public Service Co. proposals for Ida Buena Vista and Sioux counties, City of Waverly in Bremer County, and Pearle Wallach of Whiting in Monona County.
Hilton Matthess of Iowa City, 18, faced Justice of the Peace J. E. Hovee and waived arraignment binding him over to the September term on grand larceny charges. He allegedly stripped two cars in the area, including one owned by Vie Crone.
Denied clemency by the presidium, Gregory Zinoviez, Leon Kemanez, and fourteen other alleged Trotskyist plotters were executed at dawn in the prison courtyard. The Kremlin announced the sentence had been carried out, with seven more suspects under investigation as the purge continues.
After a brief district court session Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma adjourned the March term of the Washington county district court. The term opened in early March with several jury trials. it was held over as judges rotated through summer months. The September term starts July 7 with Judge J. G. Patterson of Oskaloosa. Washington attorneys seek a new judge to replace the late D. W. Hamilton, expected to be named to serve for the November term.
County recorder Mrs. R L Coulter reports that Iowa state conservation director M L Hutton official word delays open season on squirrels and rabbits to September 15. Squirrel season runs Sept 15 to Nov 15 with a daily bag limit of six and possession limit 30. rabbit season runs Sept 15 to Jan 15 with a daily bag limit of 15.
A heat wave break was forecast for tonight and tomorrow across most of northern Iowa with rain already reported in Sioux City and Dubuque. Charles D. Reed of the federal meteorologist service noted cloudy skies, while Washington posted a high of 104 degrees yesterday.
The conservation commission is conducting a census of other game animals and birds in the state before formulating open season dates. After completion the commission will meet to determine hunting and trapping dates and regulations. Regulation leaflets with required information for hunters and trappers will be issued as soon as open seasons are definitively set.
The 1936 4-H club calf show awarded grand champion Frosty an Angus shown by Donald Marek and reserve champion Blackie shown by John Frame. Judging continues for baby beef, dairy calf, and pig and sheep classes as exhibits and girls’ demonstrations proceed. Tomorrow closes the fair with a 11:30 dinner at United Presbyterian and an afternoon program at the Methodist church. Community exhibits remain open at Ellipse Lumber Yard and nearby, with livestock and girls’ handiwork on display until tomorrow evening.
Des Moines reports July saw 1,627 automobiles and trucks in accidents serious enough for investigation. 62 people were killed, totaling 257 for the year, with deaths rising past 290. Mrs. Miller notes enforcement of motor laws contributed to declines in fatalities and injuries, while more cars were involved in crashes.
Governor Alf M. Landon was greeted by cheering crowds in Buffalo N Y as he arrived to deliver his third eastern address. He plans a Wednesday eve speech at the International League baseball park following a Chautauqua stop where he spoke on education.
Miss Margaret Doolittle and her sister Miss Laura of Cleveland visit Mr. and Mrs. Clyde V. Brown at 1037 North Second Avenue for a short stay at their home.
Art Prall Fred Downing and Delbert Bailey bring about 150 bantam chickens to the Iowa State Fair this week. Each plans to show around 50 birds after a tour including the Illinois, Mississippi Valley at Davenport and Burlington fairs. Downing entered 48 at Illinois with 45 placing in the money and three in fourth place.
Edwin Griffith Jr son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Griffith will leave Washington Wednesday night for Athens Greece to take a three year teaching post in biology and chemistry at Athens College linked to the University of New York A non sectarian school. Two other American youths from New York and California will join him at the start of the school year around October first.
Bob McFarlane Arnold Carr and Claire Keating attended a convention yesterday in Davenport hosted by the Iowa Retail Grocers and Meat Dealers Association.
Mrs Lillian Westphal of Jefferson county earned the 1926 4 H health champ title and ranked fifth healthiest in the state. Her achievements highlight early county residents and health contests.
Twelve 4-H clubs present home furnishings exhibits at a church achievement day. The displays show dressing tables, stools, waste baskets, and accessories in natural linen, pink rayon, cretonne, and glass tops. Club leaders include Mrs. Ralph Howell, Mrs. W J Dea, and others. booths feature handmade curtains, baskets, and chairs showcasing the girls yearlong work.
The outstanding exhibit of girls 4-H club work in the basement of the Methodist church will be open this evening from seven to nine for those unable to visit during the day. Officers of the clubs will supervise.
London reports Britain and France may appeal to Spain to humanize the civil war conditions. The plan aims to stem bloodshed and atrocities amid world shock. Madrid dispatch notes leftist forces slow progress on Madrid's siege, with bombings on Oviedo and Cordova and civilian suffering from hunger and shelling.
Miss Jane Ludy, county welfare worker, urged repetition of the requirement that all who seek drouth relief must register at the national re employment office in the post office basement. The relief rules require names be on file with Al Faulkner at the re employment office.
President Roosevelt will meet Governor Landon and at least two major political antagonists, Senator L J Dickinson of Iowa and Senator Ed Burke of Nebraska, at the drouth conference in Des Moines. Plans include Sioux City and Council Bluffs visits with a luncheon aboard a special train to discuss matters.
