Bob Hope Puts On Fresh Act At Iowa State Fair

Bob Hope returns to Des Moines for the Iowa State Fair promising an act that outdraws Nixon’s GOP convention speech. He says he will not engage in political activity this fall but would assist the best people for the right job. He plans a 24th overseas Christmas tour to Army bases including Vietnam and a small Indian Ocean island, and jokes about Jane Fonda and Ramsey Clark.

Three Seek Election to Washington School Board Seat

Three candidates file for two school board terms in Washington Community School District. Incumbent L R Robison of Brighton seeks re election in director district 3 against James Hotchkiss of near Washington while J Richard Wiley of district 2 runs unopposed. Election is September 11 from noon to 8 PM with booths at Hutmacher Chevrolet Washington and Carroll Hall Brighton. only district 2 and 3 residents vote for board seats, all district voters cast ballots for a Kirkwood Community College seat.

Two cars crash into moving fire truck in council bluffs

In Council Bluffs a collision early today left one dead and three injured when two cars broadsided a moving fire truck. David Stewart 22 Treynor died from internal injuries while Merlyn Avis 21 Treynor was hospitalized with a head bump. Police filed no charges immediately. investigation underway.

United Press International reports cloudy skies across Iowa with north areas cloudy and southern counties partly cloudy this morning. Showers and possible thundershowers favor the south tonight and Friday. Cool temperatures with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.

Enrollment Drops Across Washington District Schools

Opening day enrollments show 109 fewer pupils than last year with Lincoln Elementary down 87, and a notable first grade decline at Lincoln. High school and Stewart Elementary show small gains while Brighton and Prairie Flower facilities register declines and Trainable school remains steady at 17.

Hay fever season starts as counts fall for Iowans

Des Moines reports pollen counts low but hay fever peak may still approach with ragweed and other pollen expected to rise later. Drake University officials note the height is around late August, with counts tapering by mid September and improving conditions by next Monday.

Iowa ice studies seek to thaw river jams and ships

Prof. John F. Kennedy leads a unique Iowa research program on ice and cold water at the University of Iowa. The institute uses a 40 foot refrigerated flume to model ice jams and heat effects from nuclear plants on Mississippi River ice. The work explores downstream ice clearance, bridge pilings, and how warm plant effluent mixes with near freezing water to influence winter navigation and river stability.
