The editor Frank Young of Clinton based Merry War weekly had his pants cleaned and swapped by mistake. He later retrieved the wrong pair and learned his own pants had been sold to an undertaker for a burial.
Mrs. Mabel Miller of Waterloo threw her two infant children from a burning house on Wednesday night to save their lives. Dispatches do not mention the fate of the children. the report ends with an hopeful note.
Arrangements through the Scott County Emergency relief committee to move about 900 cattle from drought districts to pasture sites within Scott county. Farmers who host the cattle will be paid a small daily per head sum for providing pasture and board.
Four Davenport youths attempted a melon raid on Muscatine Island but fled to town with buckshot wounds. One boy rushed to hospital. all were arrested and released after no farmer pressed charges. Police expect no further raids.
An all white group called the Max Sambo Trouts Minstrels plans an old fashioned minstrel show parade in Muscatine on Saturday and will march through the streets before performing at a local theatre.
Alfred Jackson and Fred Lambert acted quickly Wednesday night to save 23 year old Ada Fordvee who attempted death by own action by leaping from the government bridge into the Mississippi. The youths hauled her to the seg wall and held her there for ten minutes until rescuers arrived with auto tire chains to pull them to safety. The motive given was trouble with a boy friend.
Mr and Mrs G B Holden arrive from Davenport with seven children and will occupy 530 West Washington Street Anderson property. Holden takes over Farm Bureau Service Co on North Marion Ave after two years heading Davenport branch. Eldest Edgar and Charles stay in Davenport. Harvey assists father. four younger children enroll in Washington schools. Both natives of Iowa, they attend Cedar Rapids Christian Church and Tama Masonic Lodge welcomes them.
CHICAGO August 24 The hog market keeps rising with prices near 7.56 per hundred and top quotes 15 to 25 cents above yesterday. Pigs bring around 5.75 and hogs 290 to 300 pounds fetch about 7.70 amid light receipts as droughts and government programs tighten supplies.
Des Moines reports eleventh straight day of rising hog prices at interior town stations with gains of 15 to 25 cents and top at 7.25 per hundred. Choice town hogs fetch 2.20 higher than eleven days ago as receipts run 10,200 today versus 21,500 a year ago.
L. M. Bieber was involved in a minor automobile accident yesterday on Wayland road south of town. No injuries were reported and the car ended in a ditch after veering into eraved pavement. The vehicle did not overturn and only a bent fender was noted.
Mr L A Jones his wife and their daughter Helen intend to drive to Jows City this evening according to family notices in the local paper.

He notes distances to towns Petrov skyisavod Verkhne-Udinsk and records a diverse train crowd including English German Russian Swiss Czechs Americans Indians Japanese and a Chinese expert on Far Eastern affairs quoting Roosevelt.
Chairman O. Catterson of the county corn hog committee releases figures showing total benefits of $923,115 with expenses to July 1 at $10,093.42. Expenses represent 1.09 percent of benefits, indicating minimal deductions from payments to farmers.
Troop F at Camp Dodge reports a patrol drill in timber west of camp with E and F troops from Ottumwa. Corporal Gilbert Layton returned with head bandages after a wild tree branch struck him. he is expected to recover. Corporal Fritz Fields sought transfer to infantry and Willard Schulty was hospitalized after a Tuesday incident. Rookies are praised for pride of the regiment during horse care instruction.
The Iowa State board of assessment and review announced no state property tax levy for 1935, offset by sales and income taxes. The plan returns the remaining sales tax and income tax receipts to counties to cut next year’s property tax burden. First $3 million goes to relief, with $640,009 set aside to dispense with the state property tax.
Kalona hosted about 2000 visitors for its second annual homecoming with a full day of entertainment from a high school band to an evening dance. Speeches by Wapello Republican Kent Hicklin and Burt candidate W Patterson attacked the New Deal costs and urged GOP support in Congress. The event featured rides, concessions, Irish dance by 4 H Club, ventriloquism, and races, ending with a band concert and a kittenball game halted by rain.
A municipal band concert program lists Edward Smith and Miriam A. McKay as conductors performing marches overtures waltzes and themed pieces in Central Park at 6 p.m. and Sunset Park at 6 p.m. with soloists William Cox and others and selections from Sousa Rousa and more.
In Butler Pennsylvania on August 4 robbers in two cars forced a truck delivering registered mail to the curb and escaped with about fifty thousand dollars in sacks of federal funds. Driver M C Lackey could not draw his weapon as the men seized the sacks and fled westward in one car while the second car with Ohio plates sped away.
High school principal Mise Della Patton said seniors now enroll today for next year with juniors scheduled for next Monday sophomores on Wednesday and freshmen on the following day. Students unable to register on their assigned day may enroll another day but should come as soon as possible.
A rain event soaked much of the state with 0.36 inches, 0.10 falling in the afternoon and 0.26 overnight, followed by a 39 degree drop from a high of 84 to a low of 45. Skies stayed overcast with showers. Keokuk’s heaviest rain was 0.62 inches as north central counties faced possible frost, though forecasters warned the frost risk remains limited and area impact small.
