Special correspondent reports Bray seized by British forces south of Albert along the Somme, a key position toward Bapaume. Encirclement advances yield large prisoner totals and significant trophies as heavy guns are moved back to protect the line.

Tokyo officials announce a high power wireless system to relieve cable congestion between Japan and the United States. The station will connect with the Pacific coast station near San Francisco, about 4 600 miles away, forming one of the world’s longest direct wireless services. Herbert Hoover United States food administrator returned to an Atlantic port from England aboard a liner. He landed and proceeded to unidentified arrangements as part of his duties during the wartime period.
Representative Albert Johnson of Washington opposed conscription and brought two young pages in soldier’s gear to the bar, claiming they were over eighteen. Then Tilson of Connecticut prompted four young marines from the gallery to stand, prompting loud applause as a counterexample of eighteen year olds.
The United States rail system moved 5,377,468 soldiers from May 1 1917 to July 1 1918. Of these 2,902,000 used special trains, 1,079,000 regular trains, and 1,505,000 were drafted for training camps. Average distances and train loads are noted, with health and ordnance updates.
British forces resumed fierce morning operations near Albert south of Bapaume. Haig's troops pushed four miles into German lines along a 12 mile front, capturing 14,000 prisoners and many guns including complete heavy howitzer batteries.
U S soldiers advance today on the Vesle front as German forces burn buildings and materials in anticipation of retreat. American units press the attack, driving toward objectives in the sector in front of the American corps.
