Wisconsin hunt narrows on final gunman near Dells

Wisconsin authorities closed in on the last of three gunmen after a deputy sheriff was killed and a police chief wounded in Lake Delton. A 300 man posse drilled the area around the Wisconsin Dells as tourists filled the resorts, while the captured suspects were identified as Nutley and Nicks.

Space Capsule Ready For Orbital Flight

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla. America the 4000 pound Mercury space capsule was pronounced in near perfect working condition by scientists who hope to send it on an unmanned orbital flight this week. The capsule will be launched atop an Atlas booster to checkout the vehicle and its ability to leave orbit and hit a pre determined Atlantic landing. U.S. space plans call for a three orbital trips in the manned mission later this year or early 1962.

4 H Livestock Judging Team Heads to Des Moines Fair

Merritt Canada extension associate in Washington County leads a 4H livestock judging team to Des Moines. Members Joe Jones Jr of Ainsworth Jim McNeil of Crawfordsville John McNeil of Crawfordsville and Don Patterson of Washington will judge hogs beef and sheep and present oral reasons for placings.

Former Washington Man Drowned in Mississippi River Mishap

Arthur Birney of Cedar Rapids, a former Washington resident, is named among two businessmen who died when their small boat collided with a runaway barge on the Mississippi near Davenport. Surviving passengers Farus and Millstead were rescued and hospitalized. Noland is identified as the boat owner.

Washington baseball families from Little League Babe Ruth and high school levels are invited to a Thursday 6:30 p.m. potluck at the Methodist Church. Charges filed in church camp access dispute booby trap case

Fairfield UPI The fight over the Lockridge Corridor drew police attention when Rev Paul Dieterich 33 and Charles Parks were charged with assault to inflict great bodily injury for allegedly digging three trenches across a road near the Golden Valley Youth Camp The action stems from a dispute between the church camp and Herb Smithburg a Lockridge garage owner whose family was injured when their car hit a trench as they headed to their summer home The dispute has been called the battle of the Lockridge Corridor with plans of an airlift cited to bypass blocked access.

High School Lunch Tickets On Sale Friday

Principal B E Kelly Schlapkohl announced high school lunch tickets will be available Friday August 25. Students may pick up tickets at the high school office between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Hot lunches begin on Monday August 28 at the first day of school.

Ranger 1 launch arcs into near earth orbit in partial success

The Ranger 1 satellite launched from Cape Canaveral with the Atlas Agena rocket but failed to follow its planned deep space trajectory, entering a near earth orbit. NASA officials said the mission yielded partial data via telemetry while the instrument package did not reach the intended lunar path.

Elm Grove May Be City Owned

The city of Washington will assume ownership and management of Elm Grove Cemetery. A three member board will oversee Elm Grove and Woodlawn Cemeteries, with a temporary commission planned for January. Revenue from lot sales is expected to cover operations without a tax levy.

Retail Sales Taxes Rise Slightly in First Quarter

Washington state tax figures show retail sales tax receipts through March 31, 1961 at 63 780.01 up from 60 805.16 a year earlier. Comparisons with nearby communities include Mt Pleasant Fairfield Keota Wellman and Columbus Junction with mixed quarterly gains and declines.

Swimming Pool to Close After August Season

Washington municipal swimming pool will shut for the summer after Sunday August 27. Manager Harold Stevens reported attendance this summer at 14 855 and receipts to date of 4055 75, noting slight improvement over last year and thanking the public for cooperation.

Washington County 4-Hers to Exhibit at Iowa State Fair

Twenty eight county 4-H members from Washington County will join about two thousand 4-Hers at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines from August 25 to September 3. Ardell Gerot and Vaughn Rinner lead livestock entries with top class calves, while fourteen girls compete in 4-H home economics exhibits. Demonstrations by Dutch Creek Flyers and Riverside Ramblers teams are scheduled for August 29 and August 34 respectively.

Washington will switch from daylight saving time to Central Standard Time at 2 a.m. Sunday August 27. Residents should set clocks back one hour before bed Saturday night as daylight time started May 28.

Milford Bell Rites Set at Columbus Junction Thursday

Funeral services for Milford Bell, 75, will be held Thursday at 11 am at Stacy Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. Bell died Tuesday at his home. The Rev. James Rila will officiate and burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery.

Iowa Weather: Partly Cloudy Skies With Scattered Thunderstorms

The forecast shows partly cloudy weather in Iowa through Thursday with widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Low tonight in the 50s to 60s, high Thursday in the mid to upper 70s to 80s, and a five day outlook near normal temperatures with variable rainfall roughly 0.3 to 1 inch and heavier totals in the north.
