Fort Worth police report a pickpocket who targets men's hip pockets. The crook sprays acid from a squirt gun to dissolve cloth, freeing the billfold and pocket in minutes. Victims lose wallets while the pockets are emptied.
French Premier Mendes France met with Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden at Westerham to discuss European defense after the Brussels conference. Both sides emphasized unity of Western nations and early practical steps, with Mendes France expressing gratitude for the reception and noting continued Western cooperation.
President Eisenhower vetoed a 5 percent federal pay raise for about 1 percent of federal civilian workers. He called the bill unwise and said it would cost the government 312 million dollars annually without new revenue. He warned it would add 112 million to Post Office operating costs amid a 400 million dollar deficit.
Mrs Lizzie Louisa Detweiler died last night at her Wellman home after years of illness. Born April 13, 1876 in Springs Pennsylvania she lived in Iowa 55 years. She married Ed Detweiler in 1902 at Kalona and is survived by her husband two sons Clarence Cornel and William two daughters Mrs Earl hry and Mabel fifteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The funeral is Wednesday 2 pm at the Wellman Mennonite church with burial at West Union cemetery. The Powell funeral home will host calling hours.

Sky Kings will stage the air show with courtesy cars for pilots to attend religious services.
In Chicago 900000 railroad workers reached a year long agreement after a 24 hour session with 14 non operating unions. The deal provides three week vacations for long serving staff and holiday pay along with a welfare plan. Hospitals and medical coverage will be shared by railroads and employees. The package costs about 140 million dollars annually and covers clerks telegraphers and yard maintenance and construction workers.
Four people were killed and 37 injured when the Santa Fe Chief plunged off the rails near Lomax Illinois. The Chicago to Los Angeles streamliner derailed thirteen cars after leaving the track and sideswiping refrigerated cars on an adjacent line. A broken equalizer on the rear track of a forward lounge car was blamed. rescuers cut into the first chair car to reach the trapped. Hospitals in Burlington and Ft Madison Iowa and Carthage Illinois treated the injured amid pandemonium and widespread assistance from nearby communities.
Chairman Mundt announced that all four GOP participants have signed a majority report finding and recommendations on the Army McCarthy dispute. Sen Potter plans a separate views statement while Europe-based Interparliamentary Union sessions proceed. A new censure hearing list for Sen McCarthy is set for August 30.
The Iowa State Highway Commission will accept bids Tuesday morning in Ames for three Highway One bridges between Washington and Kalona. The 320 ft English River bridge near Kalona will be raised and widened, the Chapek bridge will be rebuilt as an 80 ft continuous concrete slab, and a 50 ft I-beam structure near Raymond Landau farm also on the route. Two gravel surfacing projects from Kalona to Washington totaling over 10 miles will also be bid, plus about one mile of gravel to detour between Richmond and Kalona during construction.
Wellman announces the new school year starting August 30 with staff led by superintendent John F. Fields and principal Kenneth O. Anders. The faculty includes Kermit Fessler as head coach, Robert Page as assistant, and department heads in vocational agriculture Kenneth Russell and home economics Diane Longstreth, with English Loran Van Dorn and junior high Allen D. Rogers.
Robert Ferrell director of vocal music in Washington schools issued a final call to all high school students to try out for the mixed chorus this term. Students who have not yet auditioned are urged to come to the school this week with Ferrell available in the vocal music room from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday for auditions.
Commerce Department data show the average income for every person rose 4 percent to 1709, with national income at 270.577 billion, a 6 percent gain. Nine states exceeded 2000 per person including Illinois and Michigan, while Idaho Iowa Kansas and Nebraska posted decreases. A Braniff DC3 flying from Memphis to Minneapolis crashed in a hailstorm near Mason City Iowa killing eleven and injuring eight. Pilot William Pickering and co-pilot W B Wilde were among the dead. The crash ends Braniffs 15 year fatal-crash free record. Survivors included stewardess Bettie Ann Truly. Authorities and farmers aided rescue as bodies were recovered and a temporary morgue set up.
An inquest opened in Quebec City into the death of Allen Paul Richards 36 a British born guided missile expert. Police weigh if he died from a sudden attack or a systematic beating to extract military secrets. He died after a beating Thursday at the lieutenant governor estate Bois de Coulonge. Detectives noted horses could not have caused his injuries. Richards worked at the Valcartier Quebec research center.
