The Ottumwa municipal swimming pool was used for the first time for a baptismal service. Participants were members of the Seventh Day Adventist church.
Des Moines reports 33,330,047 bushels of corn placed under government seal on federal loans. Homer Hush, assistant secretary of agriculture, notes many more have been sealed recently as market prices remain below the 60 cent loan level.
Mrs Arthur Olson of Cedar Falls and La Porte City has been subpoenaed to testify at the hearing on the $200000-a-year movie talent game just exposed in Hollywood California. Her daughter Zoe Ann age 7 was promised a role in the production allegedly to be staged by the National Talent Pictures Corp.
Newton Maytag filed a motion to dismiss without prejudice a temporary court injunction against the Clemson representing its employees. Jasper County Attorney Luther M. Carr said the state will vigorously oppose the dismissal, arguing its interest as it seeks to jail three CIO leaders for six months for contempt of court.
At the Iowa state fair the Walker galleries Minneapolis loan a Rembrandt painting titled The Erring Woman Before Christ valued at 35000 dollars. Guards include Arlo Miller Ida Grove Wendell Dean Ames and Theo Herrmann Lidderdale. Arrived by express with four men packing the box.
In Council Bluffs the Chamber of Commerce requires cornstalks to reach at least 15 feet to be eligible for the tall corn contest. President Harry Voss says officials will not inspect stalks shorter than that threshold.
Warren Shriner of Lake Park finds an 1828 half-dollar with a Martha Washington bust and eagle motif worth more to collectors than face value. The piece is slightly larger than modern half-dollars and he also owns an 1875 half-dollar found in change.
The American Legion state convention will be held in Des Moines in 1939 with R O Garber named judge advocate for the sixth year and H E Meyers and Frank Miles chosen for key posts. The state camp for boys will continue next summer and a bid to raise the veterans hospital capacity from 300 to 450 beds will be launched to reduce the waiting list.
Des Moines reports a four and a half percent rise in intoxication arrests for the fiscal year ending last month. Of 20,192 arrested, 96 percent were convicted or pled guilty. The total nears the all time high of 20,560 set in 1934 and 1935.
The state motor vehicle department reports 1814 drivers licenses revoked suspended or denied in the first seven months of the year. Most actions stem from intoxication charges as the department campaigns to remove dangerous drivers from highways.
Mrs J E Powell and her daughter Darlene from Keota were seen shopping in Washington yesterday afternoon.

In Clinton Iowa on August 23 Raymond Wenzel two Mohs old son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Wenzel was fatally injured when a car driven by his mother collided with a Muscatine truck. The boy had a fractured skull and died at a hospital. The incident marks the 244th highway death of the year.
Crawfordsville Aug 23 Mrs. Robert Gormly died last night after a prolonged illness. She had lived with her brother R. E B Lease and sister Mrs. D H Fox. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2:15 home and 2:30 Presbyterian church conducted by Rev N F Chapman. Interment in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survivors include two children and several brothers and sisters, all residents of Crawfordsville or nearby areas. Funeral arrangements by L A Jones funeral home of Washington.
Washington county breeders Pennington Brothers Wellman Raymond Bell Duroe swine George Horn enter Hereford cattle and market hogs for Des Moines Iowa from August 24 final entries show nearly 80 000 in cash prizes.
Two dozen voters are urged to back a proposed school building program in tomorrow's election after a Citizens Committee and the local Board of Education align on the plan. The group cites urgent facility needs and long term benefits for Washington's children.
The Public Works Administration reports 817 PWA non-federal project applications totaling 111,499,025.94 dollars from eight states including Nebraska Iowa Missouri Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota Montana and Wyoming. Iowa led in applications while Missouri had the highest total project cost and Montana the highest average cost per project.

A 17 year old New York clerk was arrested for breaking into the Edward C. Wicher Iowa home. Police say he admitted stealing a small amount of cash and the congressman’s automobile.
A Washington fire unit was sent to Keota to battle a fire at the Keota Oil company bulk station. Sigourney firemen assisted. Fire did not spread to nearby tanks and the danger of a larger blaze was believed past.
A flying boat departed Bordeaux for the United States via Lisbon and the Azores after an earlier restart was cut short by propeller trouble. The aircraft began its journey on August 18 but turned back within ten minutes.
Washington residents vote on a $104 211 federal grant to fund two modern grade school buildings. The plan requires a $127 369 bond issue covering 65 percent of costs, with the grant making up 15 percent. Officials say construction would create jobs and boost local prosperity. Absent voters have already cast ballots.
Board members stated that the federal PWA grant to Washington for grade schools is an outright gift with no repayment or interest. The grant covers 45 percent of the project cost and tomorrow's vote will decide if the community accepts the money or rejects it.
