Mrs. M C Carroll of McGregor cables her son Charles, manager of the Borden plant in Shanghai, asking if he is safe amid the war there. He replies by cable that he is having a swell time.
The Soil Conservation Service procures a German made Ames A rototiller for a research project in Iowa. The single cylinder power tiller plows harrows and pulverizes the soil in one operation and is believed to be the only tractor of its kind in Iowa.
Sigourney resident Leonard Vitteroas and his son Joe plan to cut a 100 year old tree at the Steve Brown home now owned by Irvin Reynolds county coroner. The elder Brown recalled his father planting the tree on July 4, 1827. Pearl Brown, the daughter in law, lived on the property until it was sold two years ago. The Vittetoes will use the tree for firewood.
A Bedford area farmer returning from harvest sought a swim at an old hole. He shed his clothes and cigarette, jumped in, and swam for about an hour. On dressing he found only a pile of glowing ashes where his clothes had burned, explaining the loss.
Oskaloosa Police Chief Ho ward Allrood was arrested on a complaint by former officer Wilbur Wortman who charged Allgood with converting property valued at 200 dollars entrusted for safekeeping by F. C. Hoff of Des Moines. He has been held in jail since June on forgery charges.

Walter L Graves a former Washington National Bank cashier died Sunday in St Margaret s Hospital Spring Valley after an operation. Funeral services will be held in Granville IL and burial at Kim Grove Cemetery Washington. Born in Chicago 58 years ago he worked as a surveyor for the Milwaukee Railway during the 1902 line project to Muscatine and Ottumwa where he met his wife Myrtle Sage sister of banker Frank Sage.
In the mountains near Cody Wyoming a forest fire swept by shifting winds trapping about a hundred fighters including CCC enrollees and park service staff. Twelve firefighters died and more than forty were burned as crews searched for the dead and missing near the fire line. Surviving rescuers spoke of harrowing evacuations on pack horses stretchers and ambulances while six bodies were identified and prepared for transport to Coug.
A thief broke into Rev. E. J. Shook's garage in Ainsworth and stole the minister's car found abandoned in Fairfield with the key missing. Police suspect the same burglar hit the Eclipse lumber yard office in Ainsworth stealing a small cash box containing less than ten dollars. Sheriff Harold M. Putnam was notified.

Spanish War Veteran Mr. Graves held cashier posts in Michigan Iowa and Indiana before settling as cashier at Granville Indiana since 1934. Surviving are his wife son Walter Graves Jr of Santa Fe and daughter Margaret at Illinois University plus a grandson Walter Graves III. One brother H B Graves of St Louis and two infant children are noted as deceased.
Thousands gathered six miles north of town to watch an outstanding air show sponsored by the Leon Beatty post of the American Legion. Jim Christman and Faye Lucille Cox performed daring parachute stunts while M. Cox provided live commentary from the field.
Tickets for the WLS barn frolic at Case field this Thursday Friday and Saturday nights are being sold by Boy Scouts Campfire Girls and other groups. Seniors register August 27, juniors August 30, sophomores August 31, freshmen September 1, JC registrations September 2 and 3. If dates clash, the high school office offers morning 9 to 12 and afternoon 2 to 5 this week and next for planning discussions.
