Des Moines report from the Iowa Weather and Crop Service notes about half of the corn made fair progress last week while the bulk remains in hard dent, with some fields drying prematurely and chaffing. Pasture losses force livestock into winter feed as hog cholera persists in the northeast and southwest.
Iowa state fairs and 20 county expositions wrap up week of prep for the Aug 23 opening. Fairs from O'Brien to Adams counties close or continue through Friday with several closing Fri and Sat. State Fair runs Aug 24 to Sept 1 with exhibits arranged by Secretary A R Corey ahead of visitors.
The Hi Y club at the YMCA runs a book exchange allowing Washington school textbooks to be left for sale. It aims to help many students acquire part of their next school year’s text book supply.
Coach George Freshwaters and Dean Harland Mead outline a six game schedule for Washington junior college with home games at Casefield and Albia. Expected returnees include Lester Jones Edsel Brown Hubert Turner and Junior Cuddy along with last year players Kern Lytle Kiesey Raymond and Snyder. Possible new enrollees from West Chester La Moyne and St Ambrose plus high school players Richards Booth Franklin and Charles Fuhr may join the squad for football this season.
A post office inspector and railway detectives joined Sheriff NR W McCarty in investigating the theft of two mail pouches from a box at the Brigh ton Rock Island station early yesterday.
The University of Iowa team lists eleven halfbacks competing for spots under Coach Ossie Solem. Key returnees include Philip Thurtle and Herman Schneidman, with Joe Laws moving to quarterback if possible. Recruits Lawrence Haltom Russell Fisher and Richard Yordy join a varied group of hopefuls from across Iowa and beyond in the race to become regular performers.
Hayes leads county 4-H group to Des Moines for state fair calf and hog judging. Washington township team members Caputo, Rinner, Merle Warner, Everett Hayes enter health and health boy in county and open class events. Four girls compete in clothing and demonstration events with county agents coordinating transport.

Ralph Dougherty will represent Washington on the county NRA advisory board chosen by a committee of O. E. Schmidt W. C. Hedges and H. C. Ward at a Better Washington club meeting. Towns in Washington county are being asked to name representatives to form a county board. Dougherty, as NRA representative, met with Washington grocers to discuss enforcing recovery code provisions. Mt. Pleasant hosted a meeting of Henry county town representatives to organize the county board. W. T. Sheaffer urged business leaders to join and sign code agreements to fulfill obligations and avoid embarrassment.
The Washington Concert Band played in Oskaloosa last night in a reciprocal arrangement. The Oskaloosa band will perform here on Wednesday evening, Aug 30, in Central Park at an unspecified time. A large crowd enjoyed the Oskaloosa concert with a xylophone solo by Pierce Knox and a number by Charles Long.
Washington Municipal band to perform in three concerts at the State Fair on Wednesday August 30. Booster banners will advertise the town on cars taking the band to Des Moines. volunteers with cars urged to assist. Contact Westphal or Scott Furniture for arrangements.
A building in Wayland owned by L. McKenzie formerly of Washington was damaged early today. A bakery occupies the site and a gasoline stove in the basement exploded, causing major plate glass breakage and structural damage.
Frances Stewart and Winifred Gerdes head to the state fair with a "New Deal for 4- Hers" demonstration of turning old garments into fresh outfits. The Washington county champions will show actual work and smiling results as Ruth Speidel models her self made dress, which won county contests before being entered in the state fair style show. Mrs. Rennie Dawson leads the Northern Star club youth group.
Loretta Cantoni and Henry Little defeated Hope Huston and Tom Cantoni 6 3, 3 5 in the mixed doubles final. Doubles finals are set for Thursday and singles for Friday with yesterday's other results listed.
A hurricane force storm battered the eastern seaboard. The steamer Madison with 90 aboard was in distress off the Virginia capes as coast guard cutters and a patrol boat raced to aid. Rescue operations extended to North Carolina and Cape Henry areas with damaged buildings and traffic disruptions in Washington D C.
Cantoni and Huston defeated Crow-C and Owen in a doubles match lost by Cantoni Little against Boyer Turner. The Cantoni Little pair won 6-2 6-4 in straight sets to secure the victory.
Chicago reports show six thousand pigs and two hundred sows entered pens as the government hog buying plan opens. Farmers wait for disposal orders amid regulatory delays while South St. Paul and Kansas City deliveries mount and pens decorate hogs with color stripes to speed processing once orders come.

Miss Viola Henry of Norwich New York won the title National Champion Milk Maid at the World's Fair earning a cup and a cash prize. Born on a farm near Ainsworth she is the granddaughter of Mrs Viola Herr and great granddaughter of Mrs L A Stephens and a Cornell University graduate who has won milking honors before.
J. K. E. Patterson of New Sharon visited Monday for the funeral of Clarence Aughey, reflecting on the local community event and arranging details.
