Divers searched the swollen Amacusac river for bodies of 100 or more passengers drowned when an express train on the National railroad fell into flood waters after the bridge was washed away. All aboard were killed, with no survivors found despite a Red Cross relief effort.
More than 250 women and children aboard the Tourist a new Calumet river passenger boat were panicked as flames erupted in the hold midstream near the engine room. The captain beached the craft after the upper deck blistered and passengers jumped or waded ashore with several injured.
Harry K Thaw through former Governor William A Stone contested Evelyn Nesbit Thaw's petition seeking an ancillary committee to manage his estate. He insists he is not insane and can handle his own affairs, stating he was found rational upon Stone's return from Matteawan hospital.
In New York on August 25 a girl named Maggie Pallucci, 18, built a bridge of an ironing board between her mother's flat and a neighbor's unit across an airshaft. The improvised bridge slipped as she crossed and she fell to the bottom, sustaining a fractured skull and is expected to die.
New York report shows novelist F Marion Crawford died April 9 1909 in Sorrento Italy. Estate valued at 48000 dollars with division among his wife and four children.
Dynamiters attempted to blow up the new seventy thousand dollar house of Robert J. Thorne general manager of Montgomery Ward and Co at Fifty Seventh street and the state line in Kansas City. The blast damaged the reception hall and surrounding walls causing about five hundred dollars in damage. Foreman Whittaker ties the act to a personal grudge rather than union involvement and notes prior attempts against the Montgomery Ward & Co Low Warehouse.
The body of John W. Gates arrived aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse in New York Aug 28. Mrs Gates and son Charles G Gates accompanied the remains. Francia V. Alexandre, once a broker and claimant, filed a bankruptcy petition in New York on August 23. He lists liabilities of 83,544 and assets of unknown. Seventeen creditors are named, mostly Broadway restaurant owners and fashionable jewelers. Alexandre inherited 2,000,000 from his father in 1896.
After twenty years living as a hermit E H Weaver died in a local hospital. A search of his clothing disclosed 6000 dollars including 4000 in twenty dollar bills and rest in bank certificates of deposit from Polo Illinois. The will goes to Weaver’s Pennsylvania relatives.
