Hot Weather Records Compared With Past Years

Washington’s official weather observer notes that 1944 had 18 days at or above 100 degrees, with months from May to August showing varying totals, while 1936 recorded 32 such days across June July and August. This year has seen all hot weather in August with nine days at 90 to 99 and nine at 100 or more. No rain has fallen in August except a trace last Saturday morning.

In Chicago on August 22 the Senate subcommittee investigating the Midwestern oil shortage was disrupted when B L Majewski of Deep Rock Oil demanded to testify. Vice President Majewski and other witnesses clashed as a U S marshal was summoned to restore order amid claims major firms push small distributors out of business.

Fire Burns Straw Off Field of Wheat

Fire broke out in a harvested wheat field at the Ernie Rouse farm south of town burning six to eight acres of straw and stubble while no grain was harmed. Dry weather and rapid spread prompted plowing and help from Farmers Mutual, with John Custer delivering aid. The next morning a fire at Mrs Edith Beaty tavern caused smoke in the building after a misdraft furnace remained closed.

White Horse Patrol to Open Festival Monday in Sioux City

Abu-Bekr shrine patrol from Sioux City will perform two shows on opening day of the Washington county exposition. The two hour program includes drills circus acts and music from a caliope. Admission is 1 for adults 60 cents for children with the patrol traveling in its own train and quartering at the armory.

White horse patrol to Washington costs exceed $3600

The exposition committee and Washington business leaders have underwritten more than $3600 to bring the all white horse patrol to the festival. KK G Hunn, a promoter formerly from Sioux City, says the troupe is highly popular wherever it performs and drawn large crowds. The patrol has toured major cities and remains the only all white horse troupe of its kind with a perfect audience record.

Forecaster Pessimistic Again Today

The drought and heat push corn and wheat prices higher with September corn at 2.46 a bushel and September wheat near 1.48 a bushel. Des Moines reports continued heat with no relief for 72 hours while a cooling trend may begin early next week.

Farm Loan Group Declares 4 Percent Dividends

About 140 members of the Washington County National Farm Loan association received dividend checks amounting to 4 percent on their stock. The local office in the Jeffrey Building is serviced weekly on Friday by George D. Umphrey, secretary and treasurer. The association’s headquarters are in Fairfield, Iowa.

Miller to Preach at Washington Park Union Service

Dr. Fred B.
