Washington’s official weather observer notes that 1944 had 18 days at or above 100 degrees, with months from May to August showing varying totals, while 1936 recorded 32 such days across June July and August. This year has seen all hot weather in August with nine days at 90 to 99 and nine at 100 or more. No rain has fallen in August except a trace last Saturday morning.
A Washington county 4-H club boy who placed first at the county show this week is listed as a winner at the state fair. State fair 4-H club winners include Champion 4-H Poland.
Principal Ethel McCreedy announces junior high registration will be held next week. Boys and girls entering junior high are asked to register in the forenoon from nine to twelve.
Kenny Parves hosts a China market pig display in Brighton highlighting breed quality and market potential. Local traders attend to assess pork futures and export prospects amid rising demand.
Students should plan for a return visit on August 25 26 or 27 to obtain locker keys and rent textbooks. Bring money for key deposits and rental fees as needed.
Des Moines report says 14 month old Richard Albright, son of Mr and Mrs B D Albright, was killed when he touched an electric wall plug while playing. He died en route to a hospital shortly after.
In Chicago on August 22 the Senate subcommittee investigating the Midwestern oil shortage was disrupted when B L Majewski of Deep Rock Oil demanded to testify. Vice President Majewski and other witnesses clashed as a U S marshal was summoned to restore order amid claims major firms push small distributors out of business.
Fire broke out in a harvested wheat field at the Ernie Rouse farm south of town burning six to eight acres of straw and stubble while no grain was harmed. Dry weather and rapid spread prompted plowing and help from Farmers Mutual, with John Custer delivering aid. The next morning a fire at Mrs Edith Beaty tavern caused smoke in the building after a misdraft furnace remained closed.
Abu-Bekr shrine patrol from Sioux City will perform two shows on opening day of the Washington county exposition. The two hour program includes drills circus acts and music from a caliope. Admission is 1 for adults 60 cents for children with the patrol traveling in its own train and quartering at the armory.
A series of dance and performance rehearsals listed for August at Lincoln gym with the east door. Events include Bavarian dancers Ballet Prologue Redmen's Council French Revolution dance group Revolution mob Community choir and historical episodes such as Pilgrim scene Spirit of 76 General Lee and Grant.
The exposition committee and Washington business leaders have underwritten more than $3600 to bring the all white horse patrol to the festival. KK G Hunn, a promoter formerly from Sioux City, says the troupe is highly popular wherever it performs and drawn large crowds. The patrol has toured major cities and remains the only all white horse troupe of its kind with a perfect audience record.
The drought and heat push corn and wheat prices higher with September corn at 2.46 a bushel and September wheat near 1.48 a bushel. Des Moines reports continued heat with no relief for 72 hours while a cooling trend may begin early next week.
About 140 members of the Washington County National Farm Loan association received dividend checks amounting to 4 percent on their stock. The local office in the Jeffrey Building is serviced weekly on Friday by George D. Umphrey, secretary and treasurer. The association’s headquarters are in Fairfield, Iowa.
Dr. Fred B. Miller will preach on I Love Thy Church O God at the Washington Ministerial association union service in Central Park Sunday at 7 36 p m The program includes musical numbers directed by Rev Walter Smith and solo by Robert Steele The service closes the summer union series with plans for next week weather permitting a film showing on the church lawn and more free acts announced later

Contestants include Neda Faye Aston Martha Downing Clara Ann Babe Falk Esther Geerdes Ruth Ann George Carol Grecian Betty Griggs Vada Ruth Guy Ann Houck Mary Johnson Laurine Kiesey Darl Martin Nancy Patterson Abigail Perez Rosamond E Sojka Helen Marie Wilcox Kathryn G Hotle. Voters may cast ballots with advance tickets purchased for the United Nations spectacle Echoes of Peace.
