J Frank Harland is accused in a suit filed by J T Daugherty for $10,000 damages and divorce alleging Harland alienated Daugherty's wife since February 1896. The case heads to the September term. local notes recount Harland’s alleged conduct and a separate incident involving Isaac Klein and a detective chase after Chas Verbom.
Burglars broke into John Koss billiard hall and escaped with a revolver valued at two dollars and tobacco. An unknown vandal damaged plate glass windows across three major blocks using a diamond, causing nearly 2000 dollars in damage in Iowa City on August 21.
Passersby report a man about 35 named C Moran found lying across two boxes under a bank stairway. He says malaria from Davenport sent him toward Kansas City to relatives. He is taken to a hotel to recover until he can travel. He fears being sick away from home with no money or friends.
Two head of cattle belonging to George Gillette and two horses and one colt belonging to John Geordon were killed by lightning during last night's storm. Gillette had insurance. Geordon's stock was uninsured. Both farms lie south of town on land owned by Mrs. Laura Gray. In Justice Rogers' Court today the case Kill Scranton vs Jacob Geyer is set for hearing. Scranton says he sold Geyer a buggy for 45 and was not paid. Geyer says he paid 25 bushels of corn and 10 in cash.
Three Foss boys and young Knox faced the mayor over a disturbance report against Mr. Banks. Knox pleaded guilty and received a reprimand. Foss brothers’ case was continued until next Saturday.
A boy visitor came this morning to make his home with Mr J W Patton and Mrs J W Patton as they plan to take in a young clerk when he reaches eligible age.
Mrs. Margaret Mintier hosted a reception last evening for her son Robert Mintier and his wife. About twenty five immediate family friends attended and enjoyed light refreshments. Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Dave Campbell Miss Anna Maxwell and Miss Mary Manners from Crawfordsville.
Mrs BR T McCall misplaced an elegant garnet pin last Saturday and a reward is offered. Mr R Porter of Guthrie Center IA visits his uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs J T Stevenson. A Baptist parsonage social drew many despite the approaching storm. Jacob's Encounter with the Angel discussed at the Baptist church tomorrow. Miss Loueelha Guzeman leaves for Chicago tonight after visits from friends. Keota faces Montezuma in baseball with Kaufman and Denzer of Davenport as battery. Alberson at third and Davis at short last season’s player returns.
Imro Fox and company will open in Washington as the season's marquee novelty. The city show promises a packed house with Fox hailed as one of the world’s greatest magicians. Old Madrid promises music comedy laughter and a strong Faust from the John Griffith company in the season lineup. Lincoln J Carter's Defaulter touring cities enjoys solid audience satisfaction.
Delegates to the W. GT. OU convention in Lone Tree Iowa report a beneficial meeting with devotional opening and committee work. Mrs KE Meacham presided. Mrs Sherfey read an engaging paper and a large audience attended evening papers recitations and songs. Sunday featured a business session with Mrs McDowell of Washington giving a talk on Ro work. New officers include District president Mrs Jk Meacham secretary Mrs Idle and treasurer Mrs Sherfey. The text also contains an unrelated medical advertisement for Halls Catarrh Cure.
