Gemini 5 Schedule Boosts Launch At Cape Kennedy

NASA officials announce Gemini 5 will launch at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday from Cape Kennedy carrying Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad after fixes to radio gear and a cable fire delay. The crew underwent a final simulator session as engineers retested the fuel cell system and telemetry amid stormy weather and a fired conductor outage.

Marines Press Viet Cong Stronghold Near Da Nang

U S Marines of about 5000 regained the Van Tuong peninsula in a three day operation that killed 563 Viet Cong, wounded 1000, and captured 116. Casualty figures for Marines were not released but described as the war's heaviest single engagement. The assault followed security moves around U S Ambassador Lodge’s return and Ky’s absence on an Asia trip. American and Vietnamese air forces also attacked targets north and south of the border, including a Thanh Hoa bridge and Dak Sut camp, with hundreds of buildings and facilities damaged or destroyed.

At the Iowa State Fair Gov Harold E Hughes activated about 500 Army and Air National Guard troops for 10 days to deter possible civil unrest including racial tension. Plan conference on safe driving in Washington this fall

Six citizens met August 18 1965 with Richard Schuck safety consultant Iowa Department of Public Safety to plan a safe driving program. A tentative October date was set. The Iowa program includes three films and a speaker series lasting about 1 hour 45 minutes. The plan mirrors similar efforts statewide and aims for broad community involvement.

Fountain in Central Park Shut Down For Repairs

The Centennial fountain in Washington's Central Park has been turned off and may not operate again this summer. City officials report motor trouble in the pumps requiring extensive repairs. Installed about 26 years ago for the city's Centennial observance.

United Press International reports Iowa will have mostly cloudy conditions tonight and Saturday with showers and thunderstorms affecting 60 to 80 percent of the west portion tonight and about 40 percent of the state Saturday. Cooler in the northeast Saturday. Lows tonight in the 60s. Highs Saturday 70s northeast to 80s southwest. Sunday outlook shows variable cloudiness with scattered showers and thunderstorms and little temperature change.
