In Fairbanks Alaska flood refugees ignore warnings and move back into homes as officials count on river decline to start a major cleanup. Gov. Walter Rickel aide Pat Ryan says residents press to clean up despite health risks from rats and roaming packs of dogs.
A fierce winter storm swept the Midwest with heavy rain and hail. Temperatures plunged into the 30s across Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan. Minneapolis recorded a 43 degree low, a record for the date, while six funnel clouds were sighted in northern Illinois. Trees fell, telephone service was disrupted and streets flooded as the storm moved from New England to Oklahoma and Colorado.
President Johnson said there is no risk that bombing near Red China will widen the Vietnam war and challenged Congress to revoke the Gulf of Tonkin resolution if they disagree. He stressed air strikes do not threaten China and defended his authority, noting the United States aims to protect its troops and not widen the conflict. Congress hearings highlighted criticism of his approach.
In Glacier National Park two 19 year old hikers, Michelle Koons of San Diego and Julie Helgeson of Albert Lea, were killed in separate maulings. A Montana State University veterinarian said preliminary results show no rabies in four grizzlies shot by rangers, with full tests pending.
In Tokyo the second straight night of rioting erupted as over 1,500 helmeted police confronted mobs in the Sanya slum. Authorities say the rampage included setting houses on fire, stoning officers, assaulting pedestrians, and damaging five cars and a bus. about 1,060 people were involved after a rumor spread that an injured man arrested was unjust.
Stearns County Sheriff said David Hoskins confessed to shooting his wife with a .22 rifle, then setting fire to their home in which four children died. He claimed the children’s deaths were an accident after he tied himself to a clothesline and could not reach them. Hoskins, a church deacon and gospel singer, also admitted his earlier account of intruders was a hoax.
South Vietnam’s two military leaders Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu and Premier Nguyen Cao Ky rejected calls to postpone the September 3 election to help civilian rivals. Thieu said a delay would not change the outcome, while Ky and Thieu avoided public rallies citing official duties amid accusations of intimidation and police support for their campaign. Five civilian candidates supported postponement, arguing more time would ensure a fairer race.
Six people died in Iowa traffic crashes Friday and today. The fatalities push the 1967 fall toll to 462, with victims including Muscatine teen Tommy Lee Tompkins, 18, and Grandview resident Shirley Preston, 21, among others in Sibley, Cherokee, Forest City, and near Iowa City.
Iowa forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies today through Sunday. Cooler conditions in the south with slightly warmer readings in the north. Light variable winds persist, with a rise in temperatures in the northwest tonight and continuing through Sunday statewide.

Mrs McKune of 927 South Third Avenue Washington was named today as the $300 weekly prize winner in a Washington merchants Thursday night shopper promotion. She is the third winner in a series aimed to boost interest as stores stay open Thursday nights. Next week's prize rises to $400. Shoppers may enter by signing registration blanks next Thursday night, with the drawing at the Chamber of Commerce office Saturday morning.
U S warplanes flew near record 186 missions Friday across North Vietnam with 105 by the Air Force, focusing on the southern panhandle and the A Shau valley. B52s pounded the DMZ area while ground troops report scattered clashes and the loss of 647 planes previously. No American casualties reported.
