In Korea the Communists released 456 prisoners as Operation Big Switch enters its third week. The UN Prisoner Repatriation Commission reports minimal force was used, with non toxic irritants to quell disturbances. The Reds disclosed 1,260 American captives freed and promised 60 more.
President Eisenhower flew from Colorado to New York for one day of talks with state and city Republican leaders on topics including a potential Korean peace conference and the New York mayoralty campaign. He planned to vote and dedicate a housing project for Bernard Baruch while briefing on anti bias contracting and East West atomic tensions.
West Chester plans announced for the 1953 54 term under Supt M W Ploghoff of Washington with open August 31 first class sessions from 9 to 3 daily hours 1 to 4 after. Kindergarten limited to Mon Tue Wed. book rentals set by grade. athletic ticket and locker fees noted. teaching staff listed with assignments.
Robertson's R E Robertson and Sons Tamworth breeders of Crawfords ville earned the grand champion trophy at the All Iowa fair in Cedar Rapids. They also won senior boar first place junior boar fifth place champion junior boar senior gilt first and junior gilt third with four Tamworths shown. The first year of Tram worth entries drew 12 breeders and the fair board praised the response.
Members of the Washington Hi Y will open their annual school book exchange at the YMCA on Wednesday. Books used in Washington high school and rural grade schools will be sold by Hi Y members this year. Anyone with used school books to sell should bring them to the YMCA. Students may purchase used books from the Hi Y members.
Senator McCarthy warned of contempt against Mrs. Ethel Rothschild after she refused to answer questions about Communist ties and her husband Edward Rothschild who allegedly took secret GPO documents. Edward Rothschild had been suspended from his Government Printing Office job following a Senate subcommittee appearance.
The Army aims to ship 326 ex prisoners of war from Korea within hours of the Walter docking in San Francisco. The first man will step ashore at Fort Mason about 9 a.m. local time with no ceremonies planned. Families will be notified by the Defense Department and greeted in a fenced area at the port with brief processing and airline tickets provided.
CIO President Walter P. Reuther charged Senator Joseph R. McCarthy has done more to strengthen the Communist movement than any American. He told a PAC rally that Europe fears McCarthy is taking over the country and that American prestige is at an all-time low. Reuther criticized President Eisenhower for not showing courage against McCarthyism and hinted the Eisenhower family allowed the oldest son to speak first.

Premier Mohammed Mossadegh is overthrown by troops loyal to the shah as besieging forces attack his palace. Defenders die in fighting while Mossadegh escapes the burning home and radio announces the shah’s return from Rome.

Auriol presided as emergency measures were approved to ensure public order while negotiations continue. The communique warned of criminal proceedings against noncompliant workers and noted no wages would be paid.

Robert Lewis, 11, drowned late Tuesday while playing with youths along the Muscatine waterfront. He slipped from boats tied to a dock near the business district edge. His body was recovered about an hour later. he was the son of Mr and Mrs Cloyd Lewis.
