Allied forces report capturing Outtersteene in Flanders and Prapelle in the Lorraine area with hundreds of prisoners. American and French actions push German trenches and expand gains amid heavy shelling and local counterfire.
The War Office reports enemy positions stretched two miles on a front with a depth of over a mile between Picardy and Soissons Reims. In Autreches area nine miles west and north of Soissons, progress continues on both sides of the Avre. Camp de Cesar near Rove is captured, and Canny-sur-Matz northwest of Lassigny falls as French troops push toward Beauvimaignes. About 1,000 prisoners taken north and south of the Avre in 24 hours. British units advance near Chaulnes between Chaulnes and the Somme, repelling an attack near Scherpenberg and a raid at Locre.
London reports Darmstadt, capital of the grand duchy of Ilesse, was attacked by Allied airmen. Four people were killed and many injured, with property damage noted. The air squadron lost four planes. week long fighting marked as the war’s most formidable air action to date with 80 German and 123 British planes downed. Berlin says German chasers shot down four large English battle planes attacking Darmstadt.
Reverend W J Williamson once pastor of Third Baptist Church and famed as the friendliest man in St Louis died suddenly Sunday from a brain hemorrhage. He was a nationally known figure in the citys religious and social circles.
American five plane patrol engaged eight German aircraft south of Titers near the Veste front. A combat saw two planes crash and fall near a wood southeast of Pismes. both American. Germans received anti aircraft fire and one hostile was reported hit near Fiswes.
On the Vesle Front Aug 19 German planes repeatedly bombed a Red Cross marked hospital in an open field. A chaplain described delivering last rites as shells struck a dressing station, killing three doctors and four patients while ten others died waiting.
Beaumont Texas August 19 The Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe railroad Harrington site explosion on a gas car causes two deaths and three serious injuries among workers.
Tokyo reports serious rioting over rice prices with 200 stores raided and police injuried. Soldiers fire on rioters as unrest spreads to Nagoya Kobe Osaka Maizuru. London dispatch calls riots the worst challenge to authority in years.
The navy orders a bone dry policy effective immediately prohibiting sale or service of intoxicants to officers and enlisted personnel. Exceptions exist only for medical administration under licensed physician direction within zones under naval control.
Amsterdam dispatches say Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria arrived in Munich for a brief vacation while Paris notes Gen Hans Von Boehn was named to supreme command on the Somme front. Paris views the prince’s vacation as a cosmetic removal from command amid German withdrawals north of Albert.
Lieut Walter B Miller of New York a former Lafayette escadrille member was killed in action August 3 during a combat near Paris His patrol of three planes faced a German squadron of eighty and he fell inside American lines while the others escaped after a fierce fight
Paris reports Lieut Rene Fonck the French aviator shot down three German airplanes on Wednesday. The feat raises his total air victories to sixty.
Paris Aug 19 On a ten mile front between the Oise and Aisne east of Soissons the French broke enemy lines last night and advanced a mile and a third. They occupied the plateau west of Nampoel seven miles northwest of Fentenee and captured Nouron-Vingre village with 1700 prisoners including two battalion commanders. The British also progressed near Menvelle taking prisoners.
Rome reports from the war office that from Stelvio to Astago and along the lower Piave there were isolated artillery actions of light intensity. An enemy attempt to retake Grave di Papadopoloo was halted by Italian fire and counter attacked, yielding heavy losses for the foe and 29 prisoners. Allied air activity increased with one enemy machine downed.
General Diedrichs, commander of the Czecho Slovak forces in Siberia, urges the allies to order a large scale offensive on Irkutsk. He warns that failing to reach Irkutsk within six weeks will risk loss of western Siberia to the Czecho Slovaks and leave Russia exposed to German control.
United States Senator Jacob H. Gallinger of New Hampshire died at a hospital in Franklin early today. In Washington a war department notice announced fresh pork two days in ten and temporary beef substitutes in cantonments due to pork surplus and high beef prices.
Czecho Slovak forces from the maritime provinces of Siberia left for Harbin on August 8 along the Chinese Eastern railway. Along the Ussuri front the enemy, about 100 strong, remains quiet as Bolsheviks and Austro Germans feel the impact of Allied troops and desertions rise.
