President Hoover returned to the White House to supervise drought relief program steps after talks with governors. The emergency setup likely to begin within a day or two. Lindberghs joined the president on the return from the Rapid camp.
Royal H. Holbrook spoke on Iowa at the chautauqua, tracing its prehistoric past to modern industry and showing 50 samples to illustrate manufactured products. The program opened with Oakley Concert performers and continued with Axel Christensen and the Redpath Singers, with Metropolitans and Chicago attorney C Ray Hansen to follow.
San Antonio Texas Aug 18 Two Kelly Field cadets Donald DeWitt Campbell and Robert Lee Scott died when their planes collided at 1250 feet during a formation flight near Van Ormy. Seven other planes were in the formation at the time. Fred Spangler of Crawfordsville attended a Washington family reunion here yesterday.
Gov Doyle E Carlton reviewing troops at Fort Barrancas says he is not surprised by reports of a plotted assassination. Three men Fred O Eberhardt Frank Rawls and Henry Halseman were arrested on Friday on evidence of a plot against Carlton according to Sheriff W B Cahoon. Eberhardt denied the conspiracy charges and pressed political motives behind the arrest. Eberhardt released on 50 bond Rawls posted 500 bond, but Rawls did not meet if.
Troop F of the 113th Cavalry returned home by special train from Camp Dodge after a two week camp. Regular officers praised the unit as a leading outfit, with top marks in equitation and a tie for first in the combat problem. Hubert West won mounted wrestling, and Troop Boot Des Moines took the Findley trophy.
In a Libe's field game yesterday Washington Boosters defeated Wellman 14 to 4. Edmonson pitched effectively with ten strikeouts. Whitehead made two spectacular catches to prevent home runs. A good crowd witnessed the contest. Next week no Libe's game as Roosters face Williamsburg there.
The Saturday rainfall totaled .96 of an inch with .38 inches in the afternoon and .58 inches at night. It was the first rain in two weeks, easing crops including corn as sections statewide received relief from a harsher period in Washington county.
The Washington Iowa community mourns Rev. W R Stryker, 78, killed at the North Avenue B crossing by a Rock Island freight as he attempted to cross. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2:30 PM at the Methodist church with Dr A W Henke presiding.
Des Moines reports a massive alcohol redistilling plant exploded injuring P. S. Kellogg, 60, who lived alone in a nearby house. He suffered severe burns as fire crews doused the flames and evacuated him. Three 2 gallon barrels and several other containers of distilled alcohol were found at the site.
Irene DeLong is appointed as a delegate by the Young People's Christian Union of the Washington United Presbyterian church to attend the 6Sth national convention of the Y P CO U from August 20 to 24 at the Y M C A camp in Estee Park Colorado. She will depart from Fairfield by a special delegate train with stops in Lincoln Nebraska and Topeka Kansas, then travel by motor bus to visit state capitols and points of interest. On returning they will stop in Kansas City to visit the Liberty Memorial.
Ray Scott, agent of the state bureau of investigation, called to Des Moines by Chief James Ferrisen, will spend several days there before returning to Washington. Scott and Struble have been checking angles of the Sweet Bailey murder case, and Scott says there is nothing new to release.
Gladys O'Donnell of Long Beach retained her elapsed time lead in the women’s air derby as she led five other contestants away from San Diego for the Calexico leg.
Obituary recalls a Washington preacher who led the area’s great revival and later ran a successful nursery in Washington from 1906 to 1926. He married Metta Shaw at Pella Iowa on June 19 1884 and fathered four children all physicians. The family survives him after a life of devoted service and later health battles.
Washington churches joined in two union services as part of the annual chautauqua program. Rev. Fred M. Blick preached the morning sermon on the Damascus Way at United Presbyterian Church and Rev. B. F. Martin delivered the evening message at the chautauqua park. The services featured choruses led by Miss Carolyn Hamilton and an emphasis on brotherhood and unity across creeds.
The Matson liner Ventura carried 2512 Tahiti survivors after the British ship foundered about 100 miles northeast of Auckland. Captain W. R. Meyer safe at the helm as Ventura travels hazardous south Pacific routes and dodges reefs while awaiting daylight radio.
At San Quentin Prison California a wood alcohol drinking party in the prison print shop Sunday night left one convict poisoned and two others believed dying authorities said today.
The City of Wichita piloted by Charles Lander and BR. O. Rudd made a forced landing at 3 28 this morning after a pump failure hindered fuel line boost from the main tank to the engine. Takeoff was Sunday at 4 08 afternoon, about 12 hours earlier. The fliers will repair the plane and attempt another flight Tuesday.
Many signups already received for the Y M C A tennis tournament with a noon Wednesday August 20 deadline. Events include boys 15 and under, men 16 and over, and a ladies division with trophies for singles and doubles. Ten trophies will be displayed this week at an announced location. Sign up at the Y M C A Journal office or Colenso hotel.
In Chicago on August 18 a crowd watched as twenty five policemen fired tear gas bombs and pistols for about an hour, driving a murder suspect from a store basement opposite Northwestern Station after bartender Ike Brodkin was shot nearby. The fugitive remained unidentified at first.
