Brookhart Threats Prompt Guard at Iowa Fair

Colonel Smith W. Brookhart arrived at the Marion fair under guard after threats against his life were found in Marion. Deputies and detectives protected him as he spoke amid a large crowd, while two letters and an unsigned note prompted the investigation. He later said broad support across Iowa solidifies his senate campaign.

Registration Dates Set for High and Junior High Schools

Supt J Hi Peet announces high school registration for August 25 26 and 27 at the high school office with school opening September 6 A junior high registration is scheduled for August 25 and 26 at the junior high office Teachers for the new year include Miss Lorena Cooper selected to teach second primary at Wallace school replacing Miss Helen Wood who will attend college. Buildings are being prepared for a smooth opening in Washington public schools.

Canton Detective Promises to Prove Mazer Innocent

Floyd E F Streitenberger detective of Canton Ohio arrived in Buffalo for the police convention and pledged to exonerate Louis Mazer of Canton who is held in Cleveland for the murder of Don R Mellett. He claimed an alibi placing Mazer at Streitenberger's home when the crime occurred and noted a 27000 dollar reward with no clear leads in the case.

Washington to host five part lecture course next winter

A five-number lecture series will be offered in Washington next winter under a contract with the Interstate bureau of Chicago. Dates, venues, and ticket sales plans will be announced in September, with high school students handling sales to benefit school funds. Funeral Services of Mrs Stichter Held

Funeral services for Mrs Henry Stichter, former Washington resident, were held yesterday afternoon at two at the home of her son in law Charles J Fulton in Fairfield. Dr Gilbert Voorhies officiated and pallbearers included Ralph Lamson O C Fryer Dr Fred Clarke Robert Louden and Otto and Roy Stichter. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Washington with services at the grave conducted by Dr Voorhies and attended by many local friends. Pallbearers at the grave were Al McCall Charlie Ford Frank L Wilson Harry McCall Ernest Atchison and Carl Roberts.

Heavy Showers Reported Across County Areas

The county saw scattered heavy showers with a cloudburst north of town and two inches of rain in two hours near the Haskins community. Hail was reported in that area but little damage. Between Washington and Crawfordsville rain was spotty with mud in spots, while southwest of town rainfall was lighter at 0.14 inch.

Valentino Shows Slight Improvement After Operations

From Polyclinic hospital in New York the Associated Press reports Rudolph Valentino has made a slight improvement in overall condition after a double operation for gastric ulcer and appendicitis on Sunday. The actor remains seriously ill as he recovers.
