Salt Factory Near Huacho Captures Natural Oddity

About a hundred miles north of Lima near Huacho a salt factory operates on an automatic plan. Tide floods shallow basins, gates stop water from returning to sea, and the extremely dry atmosphere evaporates water leaving nearly pure sediment sold in sacks. Salt deposits form in pits, quarried in six to eight inch blocks, then water refills and reforms over one to two years. Wells yield heavy saline water at twenty five feet, drawn to evaporation vats.
