Beating the Mud and Budget Keeps City Council Busy
The semi monthly city council meeting was brief. All members attended including Mayor, with Mr Dodds substituting for absent. A petition by Mrs Sybilla Gallagher for 1896 tax abatement was rejected. New bills about 200 were approved. Stichter announced a plan to pave park edges with Nat rock to curb mud holes, replacing planks. Water works boilers received new insurance and the session adjourned.

Lifesaving act at Rock Island depot saves man on track
A man aboard Rock Island depot platform narrowly escaped a locomotive. Conductor Davenport warned him as No. 15 approached, but it was Join Rupp who leaped forward, tackled the man, and dragged him off the track, risking his own safety to avert tragedy. The event shockingly ended with thanks to Rupp.

Yesterday afternoon the Washington Red and Gun Club held a handicap live pigeon shoot. Breidenbach of Valley posted the best score amid scattered details for other shooters. Tonight at 7 the Washington Cycle Club plans a race meet at Wagner's track with admission of 10 cents. A park concert is planned weather permitting after a rain ruined last Saturday’s scheduled performance.

Woman in Centerville Ends Life Amid Illness
In Centerville on August 17 a woman living five miles southeast of town, Mrs. Peter McCoy, who had been ill for ten days with typho malarial fever, killed herself by slashing her throat with a razor Saturday afternoon after a visit from Dr. Sellers. She survived until early Sunday morning. A neighbor's daughter, present during the act, left the room as the deed began, and the woman inflicted thirteen gashes before succumbing.
