George Hora, a long time Washington area farmer, endorses raising funds for a new Community Center at the fairgrounds. He urges residents to discuss the proposal, contribute, or express opinions and notes the center could benefit many, especially young people.
Joe A. White of Ainsworth, winner of the cookout contest at the Washington County Fair, will represent Washington County at the state competition August 21 on the Iowa State Fair concourse. White will compete in the beef division with judging from 10 to 11 a.m. and the king named about 11:15 a.m. An Iowa Cookout King will be named, along with first place winners in four divisions, plus showmanship and teenage divisions.
In Iowa a two car collision on US 63 near Oskaloosa killed Fairfield youths Russell Grobig 20 and Ronald Arndt 19. James Long 2 of Des Moines was injured and hospitalized. Fire crews pried victims from the Toyota at the scene.
London officials said more than 10 million British workers received automatic wage increases of 36 cents per week under a cost of living linked plan. Chancellor Denis Healey said boosts would add 480 million pounds to wages. The rises followed a July Retail Price Index rise of 0.9 points to 109.7, from 100 on Jan 15. Workers now have up to $5.72 per week extra since May under the law.
President Ford asked Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski to examine claims that former New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller financed steps to disrupt the 1972 Democratic National Convention. The White House says Ford has not selected Rockefeller and awaits Jaworski’s findings.

The Iowa National Guard unit and the US EPA join the Iowa Department of Environmental Quality in a year long project to sample water from 15 lakes. Forty two sites monthly will be tested using three jet helicopters. Samples begin August 17 and 18 and will be analyzed at Corvallis Oregon. The effort addresses eutrophication risks to water quality and recreational value. Local officials stress Guard support in the study led by Governor Ray and EPA.
The state law requires public districts to provide bus transportation to students in nonpublic schools. Washington Community School District may charge fees to cover costs above the state 40 dollar per pupil subsidy, with a high school cap of 80 dollars. About 30 St James students in 12 families may qualify, while Iowa Mennonite School riders face district-line limits. The board seeks cost study results before final charge decisions, but a pending Iowa court injunction could halt implementation.
Police report the primary detonator of a bus terminal bomb exploded in a bomb squad truck as it was moved away. The device, wrapped in a satchel, was later dismantled in a remote area. Isaac Rasim, linked to Aliens of America, claimed responsibility for the attack and warned of further blasts as authorities urged cautions nationwide.
A direct lightning bolt hit Mount Pleasant Iowa city power circuit during light rain, exploding a water tower beacon and burning out air conditioners televisions and traffic signals. Utilities Co Manager Jim Ritter said the bolt shattered the beacon and damaged wiring at the water tower base.
Three Des Moines restaurateurs erect a $4500 gold and copper plated cappuccino machine stand at the fair selling 75 cent cups. The drink blends espresso, shaved chocolate and cream served hot or chilled, paired with antipasto trays of mortadella Genoa salami provolone and mozzarella. Six waitresses operate the stand daily 8 am to closing, with imported Italian decor for sale.
The State Department of Revenue notes growth in the Washington area for the quarter ending March 31. Washington city reported taxable sales of 7 622 790 dollars, up from 6 374 124 last year, with Fairfield and Mt Pleasant showing similar gains. County gross sales totaled 28 626 313 dollars, up from 24 340 372 dollars.
Since Tuesday the Area Community Center fund has gained 7000 more in pledges toward the 500000 goal. With 115000 already pledged of 200000 to raise, the campaign stands 85000 short of completion before the September 6 deadline. More than 275 individual pledges have been counted, many from small gifts, and several hundred more residents are yet to be approached. Installment plans spread over three years are common.
