Dr Earl E Harper newly named director of the Iowa Memorial Union and head of the school of fine arts at State University of Iowa will speak at the annual Constitution Day dinner here on September 12 at the Country Club.
In Fort Dodge seven couples filed requests to wed in a public ceremony during next month's National Beef Cattle show, aiming to tie the knot before onlookers and officials.
Ames Iowa State College prepared to host about 1200 delegates for the forty sixth national convention of the Young People's Christian Union of the United Presbyterian church with a reception planned today.
Frank Cooney aged 51 a laborer died after slipping on basement steps in Iowa City. Coroner George D Callahan said cause was a brain concussion. He is survived by his wife a daughter and two sons.
Three years after the birth of a boy and a girl to Mr and Mrs John Hoodjer of Greene a second set of twins a boy and a girl has arrived. The father is also a twin his brother Paul Hoodjer living in Allison.
Ossian Leonardo Brown of Winneshiek county marketed 76 pigs for $1327.54. The pigs averaged 196 pounds at 5 percent months old and brought $9 per 109 pounds. Feeding milk and ground oats at start, he finished on corn and grass and now has 40 more head on the feeding floor.
Warren county residents aged 70 and over were invited to attend the Warren county fair with free tickets. Secretary Victor Felter said the group, labeled pioneers, is being honored as part of the Towan cenennial observance.
In Council Bluffs services will be held for Mrs Anna Petersen 64 who died of poison after neighbors reportedly misunderstood her screams. She was not found until shortly before death by her son Marinus J P Knudsen who arrived home. The poison taken an hour before proved fatal before aid could arrive.
Jerry Norman 2, son of W R McCune a Missouri Valley highway commission employee, died after an incident in a cabin camp yard. Officers could not determine if a car struck him or if he fell from a tricycle. he died later at a doctor's office.
Spirit Lake report says Robert Jon dal of Webster City died when he fell through a hole in the haymow floor at the Harry Bains farm while attempting to catch pigeons. He struck the edge of a manger and broke his neck.
Ensign Forrest C. was named acting dean of the college of education for six months during Dean Paul Packer’s absence. President Gilmore announced the appointment, with state board approval at Ames. Also approved was Stuart Cullen as chief anesthetist at University Hospitals. Effective November 1.
Berlin reports that Germany rejected the seven point peace plan proposed by U S Secretary of State Cordell Hull. Berlin officials called Hull a moralistic school teacher and accused him of reviving Versailles treaty rhetoric amid accusations of international anarchy.
Labor Day plans outline a day at Kendrick field with morning and afternoon programs plus an evening Legion dance at Rendezvous Hall. Highlights include a grudge water fight between firemen, tin can derby, horse and mule races, airplane rides, and cash prize events totaling 200 dollars for auto and animal contests.
City council and county board of supervisors pass resolutions to appropriate 3500 each for cemetery road construction. Action taken after a PWA letter from Omaha and a grant of 5588 to be applied to part of the project cost.
Willam Milchrist, a lifelong attorney born on the Isle of Man and educated in Galva and Chicago, died at 92 in Sioux City. He began practicing law in Storm Lake in 1875, regarded as one of the state’s oldest working lawyers.
Washingtons highly successful community playground ended today after a season with over 7400 attendees. George Mohr directed boys activities while Vera Harvey led girls and younger children. the Ys Mens Club sponsored the effort and gifts funded it.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill announces the list of teachers hired for country schools and schedules two meetings at the courthouse to distribute supplies, give instructions, and plan the new year. The first year teachers meet August 23 and veteran teachers August 27. rural schools open August 29 or September 5.
Fifty jurors named for the Washington county district court September term were drawn today. They report at 1 30 P M on the second Monday, September 19, with Judge Frank Leachly presiding. The list includes Martha Adams Wellman Florence Allen D C Bell Geo Breitenbach Leo Trophy Lester Caldwell and others with home precincts noted.
Washington's Reformed Presbyterian church once organized in 1863 is disorganized and its East Jefferson Street building has been leased to the Church of the Nazarene for two years with option to buy. The Nazarene plans repairs and a heating plant before winter while maintaining gospel services.
Clarence Elmer Mathews, 62, died at Washington county hospital after a stroke. Born June 20 1886 in Lac lede Missouri, he had lived in Washington for ~40 years. Surviving brother Gilbert Mathews and sister Mrs. Charles Beaver. Funeral Thursday at L. A. Jones funeral home. Troop F led by Captain Jay Brown returned from Newton and prepares to depart for Camp Dodge for two weeks.
Iowa officials announced a $1,362,859 grade crossing program aimed at reducing automobile accidents. The plan funds flashing signals at 294 railway crossings and ten grade crossing separations, with costs totaling 870,000 dollars for each side of crossings and 379,000 dollars for the separations.
A new carpenter shop is being added to Eclipse Lumber Yard with a large east room fitted for modern equipment. Charles Suthard, recently relocated from Davenport with his wife and two children, will supervise the shop and bring years of construction experience.

In Marshalltown three gunmen pleaded guilty to robbery with aggravation and were sentenced to 25 years each less than 48 hours after abducting Fred Aldrich. They robbed him of 4.70 and his car and bound him in a corn field. James Wilson, Roy Parks, and Clarence Child received prison terms. Wilson goes to Fort Madison, the youths to Anamosa.
Iowa turkey production rose dramatically from 92 000 ten years ago to 1 129 190 in 1927 yielding 2 424 722 20 in income. Largest counties were Washington Town and Keokuk with 500 000 fowls and Buena Vista Sac Clarke Ida counties totaling 156 008. Iowa accounted for about one twelfth of U S turkey output.
Fred Radda of seven miles northwest of town says his corn stalk is 15 feet 8 inches tall as verified by his son Don. He plans to exhibit the record plant at the state fair next week.
