Paving, progress, and community notes from a midcentury Iowa column
A reflective column covers economic caution and communal memory. It contrasts overreaching spending with the need for households and governments to balance budgets. It recalls street paving debates and the valorization of brick streets as stepping stones to better days, then highlights a long-running Three-Quarter-Century Club gathering with members aged 75 to 92 and a trio of visiting towns. The piece closes noting Des Moines Coliseum destruction and the push to rebuild, plus a musing on promoters and lawyers in civic ventures.
