Telegraphers driven from posts as lines go down threaten Mobile and surrounding coast. A tropical storm isolating Mobile from outside world. Loss of life feared with reports of potential fatalities on Mississippi Sound islands and along the gulf coast. Railways washed out and bridges damaged as weather rages.
From New Orleans Aug 16 reports say a gulf coast storm has knocked out telegraph and telephone wires, endangering Port Eads and sea vessels. A tidal wave swept the river east bank communities, drowning a large family near Cobden and sinking boats with several missing. Wires down stretch from Pensacola toward the Mississippi, with Bay St. Louis and other towns cut off and no word reaching shore.
Evansville Indiana August 16 Captain John Gilbert a wealthy banker and steamboat owner died at noon Wednesday aged 83 He was president of the Evansville Paducah and Cairo Packet company and held extensive local interests.

Harrisburg Aug 16 Judge Harman Yerkes of Bucks county was unanimously nominated by the Democratic state convention for supreme court justice. State Representative Andrew J. Palm of Crawford county was unanimously nominated for state treasurer. The convention adjourned sine die with resolutions adopted without debate and no reference to national affairs.
Milwaukee August 16 The American Wood Working Machine company lists factories in Green Bay Williamsport Montgomery and Norwich to be sold at public auction unless 2 244 704 37 dollars is turned over to Farmers Loan and Trust Company New York within twenty days. The company will not redeem.
At the International Typographical Union session in Birmingham yesterday a proposal for a uniform machine work piece scale was defeated and referred to subordinate unions. A five member committee was appointed to present a plan to organize ladies' auxiliaries.
The Inter Ocean reports plans for a single ten club league next season with leaders including James A. Hart or Ben Johnson for president and Ban Johnson or Hart as secretary and treasurer, Andrew J. Freedman as a key board director.
The first motor funeral on record in the country occurred yesterday in Coventry for an automobile firm employee. A specially built six horsepower hearse led the procession. All three cars in the cortege were draped in black.
