Commission Members Named for Porto Rico and Cuba

Special from Washington reports Gen. Gordon of Savannah Georgia named to the Porto Rico commission. He is senior general of the Georgia state militia and a Confederate veteran. Rumor says Secretary Alger may resign to join the peace commission.

London August 16 The Kynoch Company of Birmingham is reported to have received today an order for ten million military cartridges to be promptly delivered to the United States government.

Maygoon Transport May Leave in a Few Weeks

Jacksonville August 1 1898 a Civil War era update reports Gen Lee ordered the Seventh Army Corps to cease firing and Co D anticipates moving to Cuba with the Fiftieth and Seventh Army units. The letter jokes about returning home as they prepare for garrison duty and possible deployment to Havana.

Manila Surrenders After Heavy Bombardment

Dispatches from Hong Kong and Madrid report Manila surrender following bombardment by the American fleet under Dewey. Officials offer no confirmation from Manila or Spanish authorities while German sources say outskirts were shelled and the city capitulated. United States troops reportedly occupy Manila with control established.

General Augusti Escapes In German Launch From Manila

The Manila narrative says Governor-General Augusti told a visitor that Admiral Dewey demanded surrender within an hour. Spaniards refused and Dewey opened bombardment. Augusti boarded a German launch to Kaiserin Augusta and fled to Hong Kong before the bombardment ended. The attack began August 13.

Rail washouts halt through service to Washington Iowa

Heavy rains washed out the B. & W. and B. C. R. & N. tracks from Latta Station to Burlington causing no through trains to Washington Iowa before Thursday at the earliest. Repairs will take about two days and traffic will then resume. A washout at Moline also delayed Rock Island trains for several hours.

Duchess with 1165 Soldiers Refused Landing at Montauk

The Grand Duchess returning from Cuba with soldiers was inspected at Montauk Point on August 16. Two yellow fever cases and twenty four suspect cases were found aboard, preventing landing. Continues on page 4.
