President Eisenhower's return delay linked to golf clubs

Well wishers waited Sunday for the president to depart for a Denver vacation. An automobile halted and John Meoney, the president's valet, jumped out carrying Eisenhower's golf clubs, explaining the delay.

YMCA Camp At Lake Darling Engages Washington Youth

About 56 boys from Washington and nearby areas joined the YMCA Youth Camp at Lake Darling last week. Activities included archery, fishing, swimming, softball, basketball, volleyball, touch football, rifle range, hiking, and contests. Camp started Sunday August 7 with dinners, a swimming meet, and a track meet. Camp director Art Brown led angling trips and chapel services were held daily. Counselors were Dave Campbell Bob Zager Gordon Morris Phil Brown Donald Knickerson and Bill Arthur stood in for Bob Arthur. Howard Hayes directed waterfront. Mrs James Birney and Mrs Artemus Brown cooked.

IRA raids Welsh camp as Britain tightens security

Five IRA operatives attacked the Kinnel Park Garrison at Rhyl in north Wales but fled empty handed after tying up a soldier who freed himself. Britain launched wartime security measures with armed sentries and extra guards around key sites including Balmoral and Eden’s cottage amid reports of a large stock of weapons seized in a previous raid.

Dance at Washington Country Club Set for August 20

Tickets are on sale for the next Washington Country Club dance to be held Saturday August 20. Tiny Biggs and his Fort Madison orchestra will provide music. Tickets cost $1 in advance and $1.25 at the door, with sales at Phillips Drug store or the country club.

Attica Woman Missing. Authorities Suspect Foul Play

Officials fear foul play in the disappearance of 67 year old Daisy Betterton of Attica. Blood stains were found inside her home and a spade nearby. James B. Smith, 22, a grandson who lived with her, is being sought after being last seen driving a 1947 blue Chevrolet Tudor.

Peril of Atom Radiation Warned by Top Scientist

State Road Bids Listed for Iowa Highway Work

The Iowa State Highway Commission will let contracts at 9 a m on August 23 in Ames for two Washington county projects. One covers about 10 miles on highway 1 from Washington to Kalona with asphaltic concrete paving in two contracts. The other widens highway 92 from Washington east to the Louisa county line using portland cement concrete for just over 10 miles.

Word has been received of the death of an infant son of Mr and Mrs Richard Giardino of Aspinwall Pa The infant was born August 9 Mrs Giardino is the former Carol Walker daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert Walker of Washington Mrs Walker accompanied by her sister Mrs Irene Ofeit of Cherokee Iowa drove to Aspinwall ten days ago and will remain for a few weeks.

Airman Daniel Schmidt and his wife Una split today amid tension and separation. Schmidt, 23, a former Reds prisoner, checked out of a hotel with unknown plans. Una, 20, mother of their two year old son Danny Walter, returned to her trailer with her new husband Alford Fine, 22, whom she wed in September in Mexico.

Seven Lives Claimed In Weekend Accidents

The Iowa highway death toll reached 351 with seven weekend fatalities. Victims include Mary Alder, 13, of Maxwell, after a ditch crash. George Marienau of Sioux Falls in a one car rollover near Larchwood. Fred Newton Jr. of Sioux City in a wreck near Blencoe. Dwight Zwer, 37, of Ottumwa from a two truck crash. Don Zwiefel, 17 and 18, killed near Algona. Chester L. Hall of Hastings in a late Friday overturn.

Communists win San Marino election with imported voters

In San Marino the Communist led bloc seized 3 seats from opponents in a 66 member Grand and General Council after importing about 1600 voters from Italy France and Belgium. The Christian Democrats allege foul play while expatriate San Marinese voters helped secure the Reds victory.

Weather outlook for Iowa shows cooler conditions in the far northwest tonight with lows around 55 to 60 at the north and 62 to 67 in the south. Tuesday brings high temperatures from 65 to 90 in the north and 90 to 95 in the south with generally fair and warm conditions on Wednesday.
