Philip Tomkins aged 53 began a month in jail in ROMPORD England after confessing to stealing 428 door handles from his employer's hardware store. He said he took the handles to use them in his new home.
Western star Smiley Burnette will headline a ten day Cham ber of Commerce sales promotion in Washington Iowa on Saturday August 24. The day features two Burnette shows a kids parade and a Fun Auction at 2 p m plus a window card display by participating merchants starting August 14 with dollar for dollar celebration cash and three cash bucks on five marked items.
Marilyn Draile, 16, of Allison, named Iowa Dairy Princess at the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids after twenty five contestants. Fair officials reported total attendance over 55 000 since Sunday. The fair continues through next Sunday with multiple contest winners announced, including Mrs Maxwell of Spencer taking ten first prizes in women events.
Herbert L. Johnson a 50 year old Cleghorn man died in a two car crash two miles north of Hartley Iowa The OBrien County Sheriff s office said three other people were hospitalized Mrs Johnson 30 the driver of the other car Mrs Yvonne Nagle 33 Carris and her daughter Beth Ann 2 all were taken to a Hartley hospital.
A 40 by 60 foot cement platform in front of the park bandstand will host its first event Saturday night a square dance called by Kenneth Anderson of Washington. Funded by city money approved by the City Council the platform will also serve church services concerts and civic events with possible shuffleboard markings. Dancing begins at 8 45 with no admission. Jim Seifert chairs the committee planning future dances depending on Saturday’s success.
Vernard H H Boekelmann and James A Richart, delegates from the local Red Cross chapter, attend a ten day National Aquatic school at Northwestern Military and Naval Academy Lake Geneva Wisconsin. They will be qualified as water safety instructors after training in swimming diving canoeing boating and life saving.
Miss Cora Scofield of Boston donates a rare book collection to Washington Public Library. The display includes a three volume 1757 Last of the Mohicans edition, Evelina 1832, Bishop Burnet History of His Own Time, Words for the Hour 1858, and more. Public viewing hours are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Lee Barker of Cedar Rapids was struck and critically injured by a hit-and-run driver about three miles east of the site while seeking help for a stalled truck. A youth, Robert Smock of Marquette, chased at 110 mph near Strawberry Point, was questioned about the crash and admitted two burglaries earlier that night.
The House approved a half billion dollar yearly postal bill by 256 to 129 rolling out a one cent rise in first class postage and higher rates for air mail and periodicals. An amendment limiting second class subsidies to 1000000 per year drew 171 to 147.
A truck driver told the Senate Rackets Committee he was drunkenly transported to a voting location in 1956 and cast a vote for John O Rourke, Hoffa’s candidate for Teamsters boss in New York. The panel said records show the vote was cast in his name. Witnesses described phony local unions aiding Hoffa’s New York power bid, with several Dio associates pleading the Fifth.
In Berlin Khrushchev ended his visit by declaring there is no path to German unity through Western elections. He insisted negotiations must be between West Germany and Soviet Germany, defying four power accords. Anastas Mikoyan accompanied him as they boarded a Moscow bound plane after a mass meeting. The stance boosts Adenauer opponents while underscoring Western negotiation futility.
A two car collision on US 169 north of Fort Dodge Iowa killed 63 year old Mrs Chris Wilson of Pomeroy and injured five others. Russell Campbell and his two Humboldt daughters Janis 14 and Kathy 12 and Jeannie Westfall were treated at a local hospital. R H Eastman of Minneapolis driving the other car was in critical condition with a fractured skull. Witnesses say Eastman was speeding to beat the Campbell vehicle to a Y intersection.
The 1957 58 term opens September 3 with kindergartners reporting to their district school. Registration follows alphabetical by family name with A L 9 10 30 am and M Z 10 30 am to noon. Bring birth certificates and health report.
Washington city plan commission schedules a public hearing for 7 30 p m Thursday August 22 in city hall council rooms to discuss the comprehensive long range plan prepared by Harland Bartholomew and Associates. A second hearing on the proposed new zoning ordinance follows Friday August 23 at 7 30 p m. Both hearings are open to the public.
A group of older 4 H members from Washington County and youths from Keokuk County attend the state 4 H camp near Boone this week. About 50 young people are at the joint camp with county leaders Mrs Glen Chalupa Marilyn Schweitzer and Merritt Canady assisting.

Forty-one young Americans departed Moscow for Peiping aboard the Peiping Special despite a State Department travel ban. Several reconsidered overnight, with two dropping out. Aiming to join a Chinese Communist organized tour, others planned to fly to Peiping later, while one group met behind closed doors at the Hotel Tourist to decide.
A cool front moved through Iowa bringing cooler temperatures and lingering humidity. Heavy rainfall reported in Wellsburg and nearby towns, with 3.50 inches at Wellsburg and others including Dike, Grundy Center, Waterloo, and Forest City. A new low pressure area was forecast to bring showers and thunderstorms Friday and into the weekend. Thunderstorms on Tuesday caused a barn fire near Afton, destroying the structure and contents valued at about 2,000 dollars. Des Moines reached 96 and Council Bluffs 95 earlier.
Three men arrested after an armed robbery at Strickler's Grocery Store in Kalona pled guilty and were sentenced by Judge Frank Bechly in Montezuma. Herbert Glenn Wilson of Kansas Arturo Medina of California and Gail Burkett of Des Moines received 16 year terms in the state penitentiary for armed robbery.
A group of beginning swimmers completed the Red Cross course under Rev. A. L. Schuiz at Lake Darling and are certified as beginner swimmers. Names include Ha Harris Dixie Loeffler Edward Mineart Rosemary Mineart Archie Harris Pam Loeffler Paul Mineart Laura Lee Robison Linda Harris Ed mund Lowe Mike Mineart.
The Bay Psalm Book is identified as the first book published in America, with its release dated 1640 marking a milestone in colonial printing and early American literature.
LeRoy Brown 62 of Mount Pleasant drowned at 11 45 a m Tuesday while fishing in Skunk River at Oakland Mills State Park. Two Washington youths Jim Mulac 14 and John Davis 14 tried to recover the body with no success. They arrived after Mulac went for a drink and found someone drowning. The boys summoned help and sheriff Russell Van Tuyl was notified.
