Miami awoke to warnings and then relief as Betsy spared the city with 120 mph winds off shore. forecasters warned of a possible landfall along Florida’s east coast, with watches stretching to Brunswick, Georgia. The storm, small but powerful, has already killed three and caused injuries and damage in Puerto Rico.
In Chicago Kefauver told cheering supporters he is available for the vice presidential nomination. Stevenson avoided committing to Kefauver as running mate while Kefauver claimed 259 delegates in the Democratic race and said he would accept the vice presidency if offered. The joint appearance drew competing chants for Stevenson and Harriman, but Kefauver’s camp reported many delegates backing Stevenson.
Rev. Lewis Watters is appointed pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Washington filling the vacancy from Rev. John Van Gent. Watters will preach his first Washington sermon on August 19 after being assigned at the Nazarene Assembly in Des Moines. Mrs. Mina Brannen of Washington attended the assembly representing the local church. Watters comes from the Nazarene church at Leon Iowa as Van Gent relocates to Oskaloosa to pursue evangelistic work.
Tennessee governor Frank G. Clement delivered a fiery keynote in Chicago condemning President Eisenhower and his cabinet. He attacked Nixon and Dulles as symbols of privilege and misgovernance, labeling the administration reckless and out of touch. Former leaders praised the speech as sharp and effective.
Funeral services for Evan Anwyl will be held Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles. He died Monday in California and was born March 14, 1869 in Louisa County Iowa. He was the son of Thomas and Ann Anwyl and survived by his wife and one son Oral of Oakland.

Washington County plans its second county wide brucellosis ring test next week with samples collected from all creameries and stations. If no brucellosis is found, farmers receive no further notice. if suspicion arises, farmers will be informed and advised to consult a veterinarian for thorough testing.

In Chicago the leading Democrats Adlai Stevenson Harriman and Chandler campaigned for Iowa's split delegation. Stevenson recalled farming near Sioux City and Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt joined him. Harriman pledged broad farm income parity while Chandler attacked Stevenson as unable to carry Iowa. Stevenson led with 13 percent of votes followed by Harriman 8 and Humphrey backing.

A natural gas explosion at the Lariat Cafe in Monticello Utah during dinner hour killed 13 to 17 people and injured about 60. Sheriff Wright cited 16 confirmed dead with others dying en route to hospitals and in town. The blast collapsed the building, opened a 20 to 30 foot crater, smashed windows blocks away, and was blamed on gas accumulation in the cafe basement.

President Eisenhower extended a new invitation for Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to visit the United States for top level talks. The date is to be determined by Nehru as Hagerty announced no specific schedule. The postponement of the earlier trip was due to the President’s illness and Nehru’s busy schedule.

Gearhart Lumber Co. in Malvern Iowa was razed by a fire that drew six volunteer departments from Tabor Silver City Hastings Glenwood Emer son and Malvern. Damage projected at 75000 dollars. Firemen fought the blaze for 32 hours with cause undetermined. A puff of smoke was spotted at the rear and the flames spread to the nearby Malvern Community building where high school athletic equipment in a room was destroyed.
Residents flocked to polls to decide a proposed 100000 bond to fund an outdoor municipal swimming pool. By noon turnout appeared strong with 236 votes in the third ward as polls opened and would stay open until 8 pm. Ballots were cast in four wards at city hall courthouse McCormick Farm Equipment Store and Jarvis Appliance Store.
