Jefferson Wallace Young of Jefferson a member of the 169th in fairy at Camp Ripley Little Falls Minnesota was seriously bruised when his motorcycle went out of control during army maneuvers during services.
Company 1 of the Eighty eighth division of the American Expeditionary Force will host its annual reunion and picnic at Auld Park in Knoxville. Chester Comer and Glenn Redding of Bussey are in charge of arrangements.
A Burlington eastbound bus carrying 26 passengers left the road and slid into a muddy shallow ditch near Mount Pleasant. The driver swerved to avoid a car on a curve, and the bus traveled several yards in the mud with no injuries reported.
Thomas Lind, 20, received a 10 year term at Anamosa reformatory after pleading guilty to a 37 dollar filling station robbery. District Judge Whitney Gilliland handed down the sentence. Marvin Parker, 29, Crescent, is held for the grand jury in connection with the incident.
Twelve mechanics at Baxter Motors Co in Cedar Rapids strike over wage demand of 10 percent, seniority rights, and better working conditions per business agent J K B Stewart of the local International Association of Machinists.
The road call against non-union stage hands for non-school functions at West Waterloo High School Auditorium was lifted. Local union officials stated no union musicians were allowed to participate in non-school programs during the dispute.
Iowa data shows a family of four pays $23.60 annually as the state sales tax total for the year ending March 31, 1940 reaches $14,976,287. Per capita contribution is $5.90 based on unofficial 1940 census population of 2,535,174.

Des Moines reports Governor George A. Wilson proposing a five to ten member state industrial council. The group would map an industrial census and attract defense industries, with the option to convert into a War Industries Board in wartime. Attorney General Rankin notes several states already set up defense councils.
Two cars west of Washington collided five miles west of town around ten o'clock last night. Roy Wells and family and Wagoner of Fairfield endured minor injuries while both vehicles sustained damage. Wagoner was thrown from his car after it left the road and required medical aid.
Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey escorted Earl Grady of Grace Hill from Vinton where he was to be released after a 30 day vagrancy sentence. Grady is wanted here on an assault and battery warrant issued weeks earlier.
Bastian Don Hartog is held in the Keokuk county jail at Sigourney on forgery charges. He allegedly passed a forged check at Sigourney and was arrested by Sheriff Tremmell. Sheriff Putnam reports the same man being held in Marshalltown for forgery and linked to forged checks in Kalona. If not sent to state prison, he will probably face further action.
Washington county farmers with tall corn are urged to enter a contest for the loftiest stalks. Entries due at the Journal office by ten Friday morning. Local prizes are 10, 5, and 3 dollars for first to third. State prizes total 75, 25, and 10 dollars. Three Washington businessmen, led by O. E. Schmitt, will judge.
Washington County 4 H boys and girls and leaders prepare for the annual achievement show to be held in Washington on August 19 21 and 29. Livestock exhibits occupy the Busby building with judging of baby beeves dairy heifers and sheep Monday and swine Tuesday. Girls exhibits in the Methodist church basement feature first year clothing and a style revue with winners advancing to the Stars Fair. An evening program Tuesday August 29 includes demonstrations health winners chorus and other numbers inviting the public to attend.
The Iowa City William Hor Rabin Construction submitted the low bid of 8655 for one tenth mile of paving in Washington from East Madison to Washington Street. The project is one of about fifty low bid contracts announced by the state highway commission, with 19% mills of paying. The two blocks will become part of roads No. 1 and 2 through Washington once completed, and work is expected to start soon.
Wayland August 14 Jim My Lee Davison four year old son of Mr and Mrs Homer Davison living three miles southwest of Wayland had his right foot nearly cut off at the ankle yesterday afternoon. The foot was severed by a mower driven by his father and only a shred of tendon remains. Doctors fought to save the foot but outcomes were unclear.
A defendant was ordered brought to court to answer a forgery count. The filing specifies the charge and court appearance details, with the defendant required to appear for arraignment and legal proceedings.
A jury list of fifty men and women was drawn at the courthouse to serve in district court trials at the September term opening Monday. Petit jurors report the afternoon of the second Monday. names include Myrtle Anderson, R. Baker, Jennie Bassler, Ray Bell, Oran Berkey, Tom Carter, Florence Dayton, John DeFreese, Clarence Dodds and many others from wards and townships.
The tenant purchase committee seeks new applications for Bankhead Jones farm tenancy loans in Washington County. Eligible families may apply for one loan. previous applicants may update or reapply. Over three years Iowa bought 273 farms totaling about 38967 acres. 3 percent interest on a forty year farm and home plan. A boy was mowing near a strawberry patch when a rabbit darted across his path and he was chased by Jimmy Lee. He was taken to a local physician and then rushed to Mt. Pleasant hospital where doctors expect several days to determine if the foot can be saved. Jimmy Lee is the youngest of eight children.
W A Erbe longtime Maquoketa Iowa high school principal signs a contract to lead Washington high school for the next school year. He will replace George Fields who left for Boise Idaho. Erbe will move to Washington around August 26 bringing his family and will supervise registration in Maquoketa before departure.
Lawrence J. Benninger will head the commercial department at Washington High School next year replacing Ralph Le Moine who resigns after seven years to take a better position in the East Waterloo high school. Benninger hails from Rochester.
Ambassador John Cudahy arrives in Washington to meet Sumner Welles after criticism over an unauthorized interview in London. He traveled aboard a Yankee Clipper and reached New York the day before.
New York says Speaker William B. Bankhead is designated to notify Henry A. Wallace secretary of agriculture of his nomination as democratic candidate for vice president. Notification ceremonies slated for August 29 at the Des Moines coliseum.
In Washington August 14 officials said Britain will buy standard supplies in the United States to conform with United States army and navy regulations. The move comes as officials urge uniform procedures for wartime outfitting.
German air armada attacked Dover and southeast Britain as Britain bombed Italian aircraft plants and German arms centers. Berlin reports claim German and British losses, with parachutists landing in the Midlands and home guards sweeping the area. A light ship sank after six German planes attacked, while British destroyers may have sunk a German armed trawler and torpedo boat.
Wayland residents Arthur Wyse wife and sister Miss Minnie Weaver injured when their car veered off near Ottawa. Roger Wyse 19, driver, fell asleep, causing crash after returning from Ohio visit. Mrs Wyse suffered head wound, Miss Weaver neck fracture, Roger and Betty uninjured.
