Air losses in North Vietnam reach peak as two jets downed

UPI reports North Viet Nam antiaircraft defenses claimed two more U.S. jets, raising weekly losses to 13 in the costliest period of the air war. RF101 Voodoo reconnaissance and an F105 fighter were missing or downed within 60 miles of Hanoi amid dogfights with MIG17s, while Hanoi claimed six American jets were shot down in other provinces. Capt Norman L. Wells and Maj. Homer D. Villarreal, flying cover for an F105, engaged MIGs near Hanoi. Wells and Villarreal fired 20mm cannons and damaged a MIG left wing as two pilots pursued the attackers.

18 000 BOBBIES JOIN SEARCH FOR SLAYER OF OFFICERS

London police mounted the largest manhunt in British history as about 418000 officers, many armed for the first time, swarmed after three Scotland Yard detectives shot dead while questioning suspects near Wormwood Prison. Constable Geoffrey Fox and Detectives David Bertram Wombell and Christopher Tippett Head died in the attack.

King march in Chicago shows peaceful progress

Open housing demonstrators led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. march through an all-white southwest side neighborhood with 700-plus participants. Police, many sworn in hours earlier, keep order as crowds of white youths jeer and throw objects. Bevel calls the two-hour event a sign that Negroes can live peacefully in white areas while some attendees spread Nazi literature.

Killer ex janitor kills four in New Haven cafeteria

Joseph Davis 51, a shot suspect in a lovers lane killing, opened fire at the Winchester Western Division of Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp cafeteria wounding four before police struck him dead. A secretary, Mrs. Ellen Koch 51, was critically wounded. Davis fled from a Thursday firing and was killed after exchanging fire with officers near Yale New Haven Hospital.

Eleven Injured In Walpole State Prison Riot

Inmates at Walpole State Prison hospital rioted on a Friday night injuring eleven guards. About 15 convicts armed with knives and clubs took three guards hostage for over an hour before surrendering to state police and officials. The disturbance began when an inmate sought more medication and crowds seized tranquilizers and narcotics, leaving one guard in serious condition with a knife wound.

Farmer dies in tractor overturn near Peterson Iowa

Chris Felten Jr., 33, was killed Friday when the tractor he was driving overturned on a country road near his farm five miles southwest of Her. His wife said he left the farmyard around noon and a neighbor found him about an hour later. Authorities reported a crushed chest.

Two Die in North Hills Two Car Crash

Two people died and several were hospitalized after a two car collision north of Hills on Friday. Victims include Raymond Carmichael 21 of Riverside and Mrs Frank Mougin Kleine of Tipton. Others in the second car were family members and a child. Services planned for Carmichael and Kleine in Town City and Iowa City chapels.
