James Farran Sr. a Brooklyn machinist demanded 14.95 from a laundry for a shirt lost in the wash. The laundry mailed a 10,005 check, Farran accepted as a settlement and agreed to return it to the embarrassed bookkeepers.
A severe series of earthquakes devastates Cephalonia Ithaca and Zante with widespread ruins. Rescue ships from the U S Sixth Fleet and British Mediterranean squadron rush to aid Cephalonia and Patras as death toll climbs beyond 500.
The Keota Jaycees begin a six week secret membership drive in which Richard Beck receives a doe rabbit and several young rabbits as a token for each new member. The list of rabbit recipients is kept secret and members must produce signed applications to continue the campaign. The effort ends September 23 with a rabbit feast if the plan succeeds.
The Women's Christian Temperance Union offers eight motion pictures for church school and community use in Washington County. Films are stored in the county superintendent of schools office, catalogued and free to borrow by any group. Titles include A Tower of Strength Ceiling Unlimited Dollars and Sense He Ran a Race He Went Straight Home Smoking's Something to Think About The Chance of a Lifetime and The Tale of Three Little Squirrels colored.
Mrs. Fred Rejy reports the death of Eugene Drury born June 24 1878 Beloit Wisconsin. Son of Laurence Adams Drury and Hattie Abbey Drury he married Marguerite McGugin August 23 1898 in Valparaiso Indiana. After an operation he died Tuesday August 11 in Minneapolis and will be buried in Chicago with Dr. and Mrs. Reid attending the funeral.
Gen Mark Clark announced the second group of American repatriated POWs will depart Tokyo by military transport plane tonight. The first group of 17 arrived in the U S on Wednesday. The flight will land in Hawaii for two men and San Francisco for the remaining nine with Sgt Lawrence A Busbee among those traveling to California.
Army Secretary Robert T. Stevens said about 250 Chinese Communist prisoners involved in crimes may be held until the final stage of the prisoner exchange. He noted charges range from murder of a UN guard in a POW camp to lesser offenses and emphasized the United States is not delaying the exchange overall.
A welder's torch allegedly touched off a spectacular blaze at a Livonia Michigan General Motors plant. The inferno killed two workers and injured more than twenty others as the two block long facility was reduced to rubble. Officials estimated damages ranging from 40 to 70 million dollars while about 3,000 employees on site escaped before the fire intensified. The blaze began during the late Wednesday shift near a tank of highly flammable cleaning fluid.
Berlin reports Soviet army units harvest crops in East Germany due to farm labor shortages. Troops operate separately under officers and do not mingle with local workers. The article notes hunger in East Germany with 2.5 million free parcels distributed in two weeks and a shifting food program ending Friday with a new plan starting August 27. Communist officials face pejorative purges amid the shortages.
A three man jury ruled the deaths of 15 year olds Charles Dunham and Mickey Coulter and 14 year old Carl Hobert accidental asphyxiation in an unused Shamrock mine near Centerville. No blame was fixed. The boys were found dead after being overcome by black damp gas.

Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy said sworn testimony shows a Communist employed at the Government Printing Office had access to A-bomb and H-bomb secrets. He refused to name the worker as public hearings approach, while an atomic energy spokesman said no restricted data is sent to the main GPO.
The Washington county clerk reports a marriage license was issued Wednesday August 12 to Lloyd G. Bradshaw and Viola Mae Johnson, both of Washington.
Tokyo reports state unrest in North Korea with 25 officials purged. Names removed include Kwong Chik and Chu Nyong Ha, former ambassadors to Peiping and Moscow. New leaders emerge among younger Communists. three deputy chairmen of the Labor Communist Party Central Committee, including Pak Chone Ae and Pak Chonk Ok, plus Gen. Nam Il.
Funeral services for H B Dawson 19 of Columbus Junction will be held at the Methodist church in Columbus Junction Saturday at 2 with Rev George C Lennington officiating. Arrangements are with Stacy funeral home. Burial will be in Columbus City cemetery.
Charles Seward 60 of Davenport pleaded guilty to first degree murder after admitting he shot his wife Florence 58 and then turned the gun on himself. He made the statement from Mercy Hospital where he is recovering from a chest wound. Detective Captain Harold Thorden said Seward signed the confession.
4 H girls from Washington county conclude a two day achievement show with a style revue at the armory. Senior demonstration teams compete for Iowa State fair berths while judges deliver final results.
An Atlantic hurricane powered by winds up to 100 miles an hour moved northward off the Georgia South Carolina coast. By mid morning the storm was near Cape Hatteras with rain, strong winds, and small craft seeking safe harbor as Air Force bases readied aircraft inland.
Funeral services for D. K. Pence were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church with Dr. C. R. Reed presiding. Pallbearers included Lee Holland and Ed Mund Morrison, among others. Graveside rites at Elm Grove were conducted by the American Legion with color guards and a firing squad. Jess Radda Jones Funeral Home handled arrangements.
