Washington's 28th annual chautauqua opened with a fair crowd and strong program. President Peet praised efforts, Rev Frye introduced the Filipino artists who performed a diverse concert mixing classical, jazz, and Filipino music.
At a fall festival meeting in Washington plans advanced for the September 15 to 17 celebration. The finance committee has raised 1800 from local businessmen as canvassing continues. Funds go to festival features with 1400 allotted for the farm products premium list led by Harold Montgomery. Harry Ward chairs entertainment as Wise Long books concessions. A booster drive, led by Shirley Clark, launches to raise more funds with 1000 booster buttons to be worn by contributors. The effort aims to involve hundreds in supporting the visitant festival days.
Wayne county prosecutor Harry S Toy announced a suspect in the Willis area killings of two teen couples. The man, a former Michigan prisoner using the alias Herbert Smith, allegedly admitted possessing the gun and is tied to the same weapon as the fatal shooting. William Beard and family departed Detroit after a Washington visit.

Osceola Iowa August 13 J E Hepler Streator farmer arrested by Sheriff A T Stansell in connection with a deadly crash near Osceola that killed Mrs May Donahue of Corning Hepler was taken to Burlington with two daughters Wilma and Mildred after the Mississippi River bridge incident Hepler said he tried to pass the car carrying Mrs Donahue and stayed six hours in Osceola before moving on.

Arthur Bebe, 31, died from suffocation after a mattress fire started while he smoked in bed in Humboldt Iowa last night.
Kenneth Stout, 21, who vowed never to be captured alive and did not survive his latest confrontation, will be buried in Brighton Town. The Wisconsin reformatory alumnus shot Lafayette patrolman Harry R. Farrell and was fatally wounded. his father William Stout identified the body.
