Washington Aug 12 OPA boosts average price ceilings on new automobiles by 7.3 percent and signals another increase possible later. The move aims to restore dealers peacetime margins and is the fourth 1942 car price adjustment.
Mrs Lester Nicola 40 of 116 North Seventh Street died about four this morning at Washington county hospital after a stroke suffered during homecoming activities at Cottonwood church near Wayland. Funeral 2 pm Wednesday at Cottonwood church with Stacey funeral home in charge and burial in Cottonwood cemetery.
John M. Shalla aged 85 died at 6 15 this morning at his home 1134 South Iowa Avenue after eight weeks of illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Fred Miller in charge. He was born May 1 186? near Richmond son of John and Mary Shalla and married Veronica Malichky Feb 1 1887. Surviving are his wife, ten children, 21 grandchildren and two brothers with one sister.
Newton Iowa Aug 12 Jasper county authorities hold Karl Ulrey 46 in connection with the fatal shooting of George Charls 72 a bachelor farmer six miles southwest of Prairie City A Winchester found near Charls body identified as Ulrey s pistol and car found near the scene were both bullet riddled Ulrey admitted hiding in a corn field near his neighbor s home yesterday Charls was shot to death near his home and his car was found bullet damaged nearby

The James Harlan Thoma post of the American Legion at Ainsworth reports a $575 net from a recent white elephant sale and over $600 in the treasury. Donations from Washington businessmen aided the sale. Auctioneer Paul Klotz of Columbus Junction oversaw spirited bidding as the Ainsworth band performed. The post has 24 members and plans a drive to reach 65.

Paris August 12. Secretary of State James F. Byrnes backed down from a hard line over the Italian treaty as he chaired the peace conference. Soviet vice foreign minister Andrei Vishinsky accused Byrnes of insulting Russia sparking an uproar. Byrnes opened the debate to general discussion after citing prior proceedings that limited Yugoslavia to speak on Italy today.
Porter says in a radio address that clothing costs will continue to increase for a period and then ease in 1947 as supplies grow and competition returns. He cautions higher prices on autos and other goods and expects only a small overall cost of living rise if anti inflation powers are used.

Survived by husband W E Frame daughter Marjorie Johnson son John Frame stepsons H L Frame and E K Bleen stepdaughter, one brother Harry Pearson, four grandsons and one granddaughter.

Lt. Col. O J Brown has been recommended as acting postmaster in Washington filling the vacancy since Postmaster De Long’s death. The six month appointment requires approval and he carries strong party backing from Democrats Harry Dye W R Hart and Jake More. Brown, a veteran of both world wars, previously led Washington police and commands high local regard.
In central Sweden the Swedish army sent investigators after rockets reportedly crashed last night amid a meteor-like shower of missiles. An army source called the visitation most serious and said an all-out effort would determine the rockets origin. Theories suggested possible Russian rocket experiments.
The White House announced President Truman will not seize the J. S. Case Co farm machinery plants amid a six month strike over wages and conditions. Officials expect the policy to apply to Allis-Chalmers as well. Labor unions representing about 25,000 workers continue seeking raises, security, and seniority rights while conciliation efforts continue.
