Youth exchange brings French youths to Washington County

Two French youths arrive for August homestay in Washington County as part of the International Cultural Exchange program. Francoise Gilbert, 17, from Lille, stays with Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Martin of Washington, while Christophe Canouet, 18, of Bordeaux lives with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wehr of rural Keota. They will remain until August 31 under the nonprofit program’s aim to foster goodwill between nations.

Eldon youth to be tried as adult for arson

An Eldon youth, Toby L. Swaim, 18, held on $10,000 bond in Wapello County Jail pending county attorney information charging arson. District Judge Max Rushmeyer ruled he would be tried in District Court as an adult, with the case transferred from juvenile court following a July 7 fire that gutted the Eldon Elevator and destroyed grain valued around $150,000. Investigators continue the probe.

Counties seek relaxed road standards to cut costs

Adrian Brinck told the Iowa Department of Transportation Commission that financially strapped counties may abandon road work unless secondary road specifications are relaxed. He urged accepting lower standards for roads handling 100 to 200 vehicles daily to cut costs from about 250 000 dollars per mile by paving the existing roadbed without wider shoulders or steeper slopes.

Iowa watchdog urges automatic fines for late campaign reports

Des Moines UPI reports Iowa Campaign Finance Disclosure Commission director Richard Connolly Jr. urged lawmakers to levy automatic late fees on political committees that miss reporting deadlines. He said current law lacks authority to penalize delinquent filers, calling for a set fee when reports are late.

Nixon Tapes Moved to National Archives After 3 Years

Three years after Nixon left office three trucks with guards carried the tapes and Nixon administration papers from the White House to the National Archives. The move, under custody of the General Services Administration, follows a Supreme Court ruling that the government owns the materials. Officials say organizing the material will take about three years with at least another year before public access.

Ford Pinto fuel tank risk linked to rear crashes

Mother Jones accuses Ford of neglecting gas tank placement in pre-1977 Pintos, noting more than 500 deaths from rear-end fires. NHTSA says its probes, prompted by the Center for Auto Safety, found crashes at excessive speeds responsible for ruptured tanks above 30 mph.

Ainsworth approves water project bids and financing plan

Ainsworth City Council opened bids for a $250000 water well and treatment plant project and moved to secure financing. Low bidders were Langman Construction for the plant at $109,379 and Warner Well & Pump for the well at $96,202. Rates may rise to about $11 monthly after completion, with construction possible by next spring and financed by a 5 percent FMHA loan and water revenue bonds.
