Washington received 1.60 inches of rain in the last 24 hours per the official weather observer at 7 am. A weekly tally shows 2.99 inches since last Saturday. The rain came in four showers, largely soaking the ground. Wellman area reports unofficial four inches in two days. Skies stay overcast with showers forecast through the weekend.
Police investigate a break in at Jerry & Bill's Firestone on the east edge of Washington. Nine television sets valued around 3000 dollars were taken from the well lighted display room and loaded into a vehicle backed up to the rear of the building.
School officials of the Washington Community School District plan a marathon Board of Education meeting at 7 30 p m in the high school library the August session covers 19 items including a public hearing on the 1974 75 budget bids for hot lunch dairy and bakery products transportation topics private school auxiliary services non school activity buses state bus inspection results and a girls summer softball proposal amid potential federal directive pushes for equality in high school sports.
Washington firemen battled a roof fire at the Dale Garrett home at 1008 East Washington Street on a rainy Friday. Lightning likely struck the attic, smoke filled the house but only minor damage, estimated at about 1000 dollars. Mrs. Garrett had a recently broken ankle and was confined to a chair.
As a UM freshman Gerald Ford washed dishes for free meals and soon rose to prominence as the Wolverines star center and defensive lineman named the team’s most promising player. Iowa officials say this week's widespread rainfall will modestly boost soybeans while yielding little help for drought-stricken corn. Secretary Robert Lounsberry cites a 25 to 30 percent cut in statewide corn yields, with soybeans potentially down around 20 percent. Experts note late planting and past drought conditions limit overall gains, though pastures may green and soybeans show pod development.
