Washington National Guard unit of 84 soldiers is at Camp Ripley Minnesota for two week active duty training. The squadron Troop A 1st Reconnaissance Squadron 113th Armor 34th Infantry Division camps five miles north of the main camp and endures long days amid mosquitos and wooded terrain. They arrived by convoy Saturday with 10 jeeps 42 ton trucks and a tow truck facing a violent storm that damaged tents before weeks of field maneuvers and rest breaks.

Durward E. Jones, 60, a veteran Iowa educator who taught at Wayland Grandview and Mt. Vernon among other schools, died August 9 in an Ottumwa hospital. Funeral set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Winfield Presbyterian Church. Born July 22, 1902 in Albia, he was a 1925 Iowa Wesleyan College graduate and is survived by his parents three sons Paul Keith and Bradley and nine grandchildren.
