DES MOINES WAVES recruits, Iowa young women, will join WACs for review this afternoon. They depart tonight in two special pullmans for basic training at Hunter College in New York. A reception and dinner, hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary, will be at 7 p.m. at Hotel Kirkwood.
William H K Terry, 36, of Bie Clifty Kentucky, held in Black Hawk county jail on charges of stealing teals from Fort Knox Kentucky. He was arrested by FBI near Hudson Iowa where he had been working since leaving Kentucky three weeks ago. Terry, a former Fort Knox plumber helper, said he bought the tools.
The county salvage committee unveiled a new scrap collection scheme for the year. Township chairmen oversee districts with school district spotters directing farmers to ready iron and other materials for direct junk buyer pickup reducing farm trips. Quota runs 1104 to 1200 tons as farming stock is repurposed, with towns following prior methods and a focus on centralizing material for efficient pickup.
The War Department orders 5100 U S soldiers to assist North Dakota under Governor John Moses. Detachments from Camp McCoy Madison Scott Camp Garden City and Buckley will be sent to Grand Forks Minot Devils Lake Williston and Bismarck bases. Troops will not profit. farmers pay prevailing wage, funds go to treasury. perishable foods bought locally with ration stamps from army quotas.
Washington officials warn millions in crops and feed could go unharvested this year unless farm labor speeds up. Since April 1 the WFA and extension service placed 489,066 workers, with 3,000,000 more needed in the next three months. Up to Aug 1 47,408 foreign workers arrived, with total expected to reach 75,000 by fall.
War Food Administrator Marvin Jones announced a government program for unrestricted production in 1944 and the abandonment of the ten year old New Deal policy of rigid crop control. The 1944 food program will be on a purely voluntary basis.
Minnie Belle Michaels Brown died after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fred K. Miller at the Methodist church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine and led the Women's Relief Corps. Born December 30, 1866, in Logan county Illinois, she married George W. Brown in 1885 and lived near Waynesville before moving to a Washington area farm. Surviving are son Walter R. Brown. daughters Mary Hildebrand and Helen Bell. siblings John Michaels, Amelia House, Sarah Mangle. 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One daughter Bertha Stout and three sisters preceded her.
Judge in Iowa heard motions on a district court docket before trial, transferring certain cases to the equity docket. Actions included Nat ural Gas Pipeline Company of America condemnation suits and several others such as W T Rawleigh Co v Linus Wood and Mary L Nickolaus v James Hoskins with various rulings including strike, dismissal, and continuance. Army service leaves affected a defendant in one case.
The first transcontinental telephone line connected New York and San Francisco in January 1915 marking a milestone in long distance communications. The event highlighted advances in nationwide phone networks and industrial innovation.
Francis Robinson McCracken died yesterday at Mt Pleasant after an illness since the start of the year. The body will go to Pawnee City Nebraska for burial under L A Jones funeral home arrangements. He was born January 24 1863 in Monmouth NL and lived in Clarinda Iowa and Pawnee City before moving to Crawfordsville to live with his brother in June. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church since age 18 and is survived by sister Iva Me Cracken of Pawnee City plus his Crawfordsville brother Rev R M McCracken.
Dallas F Chamberlin and Virginia Isabelle Hammen both of Washington secured a marriage license yesterday granting permission for their approaching wedding.
DES MOINES Iowa American Legion convention moved to routine business with district caucuses and committee meetings. Resolutions from posts were sifted, delegates to the national convention were chosen, and convention committees named. Nominees for state department posts were not released until Wednesday morning.
The Order of the Eastern Star is asked to meet at the Masonic temple at 1 30 p m tomorrow and go in a body to attend the funeral services of Mrs George Brown.
Mrs George W Brown died last night at her home south of town. She was a past president of the Women’s Relief Corps and active in the Methodist church Eastern Star and White Shrine.
