Absolutely No Cooperation- Adkins Car Rail Incident

Ronald Adkins of Columbus Ohio faced a series of mechanical failures as his 1950 model car stalled on railroad tracks. Brakes failed when stopping at a crossing, gear shift halted the car, and engine flood forced him to jump clear as a train struck the vehicle and hurled it 60 yards down the line.

Capacity Crowd Attends Eighth Washington County Horse Show

A capacity crowd filled bleachers and overflow areas for the eighth annual Washington Saddle Club horse show, closing the Washington County Fair. About 2,500 plus attendees saw morning and evening programs with top horses from the region and Missouri. Judges, ring masters, and a square dance exhibition highlighted the event, with prize winners across Show Pony, Open Three Gaited, Quarter Horse Pleasure, Open Fine Harness, Open Parade Horse, English Pleasure, Pony Parade, and Open Five Gaited classes.

Governor Loveless Tours State Hospital

Gov Herschel C. Loveless surveyed the State Mental Health Institute at Independence and found the facility generally well kept. He noted improvements in cleaning and interior paint, cited fire-safety needs and rug replacement, and said 25 to 40 percent of patients could be sent home within 30 days with proper intake and screening procedures. There are about 1,100 patients at the hospital now.

Four Youths Earn Showmanship Honors at County Fair

Four Washington County youths earned showmanship honors at the county fair. Bill Mouser of the Washington FFA and Cedar Chips 4-H Club won sheep showmanship championships. Marvin Kolosick of Kalona Klippers 4-H won daily class showmanship. Dean Weaver of the Washington FFA captured swine showmanship honors, and Harold Bohr of Lime Creek Livewires won the baby beef showmanship championship.

Rayburn backs Senate civil rights bill in Rights fight

Speaker Sam Rayburn voiced support for the Senate amended civil rights bill and urged Republican leaders to help Democrats pass it. He suggested House concurrence in Senate changes or a limited jury trial amendment for voting cases, while noting GOP votes on the Rules Committee would be decisive.

Rebels in Cuba Clash as Loyal Forces Report Fatalities

In eastern Cuba loyal forces killed four rebels and wounded several as fighting flared at Alto Dos Brazos Peladero and Cubitas. A policeman was killed and another wounded in Matanzas amid a bombing case, while five rebel agents who fled from Fort Lauderdale were being sought after crash landing their plane near Havana.

Keokuk Prisoners Recaptured Today

Four Keokuk Iowa prisoners who escaped earlier were found in a field near Kahoka Missouri after a grandmother recognized one of them from a stolen car. Lee County Sheriff H R Delahayde and Keokuk officers recovered the men who tried to flee as warning shots were fired.

Conesville Man Dies at Iowa City Hospital

Harold Hawkins 58 of Conesville died Tuesday evening August 6 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services are Friday August 9 at Evangelical Reform Church Conesville with Rev Daniel Kasten officiating. Burial will follow in Conesville cemetery.

Accused Spy Abel Remains Held With No Bail

Rudolf Abel, a 55-year-old Russian accused of masterminding a spy network, was ordered held without bail ahead of a Federal Court hearing. A grand jury indicted him on three counts. if convicted he could face the death penalty under Rosenberg era law.

Eldon Saltzman discovered a weasel beneath his lawn mower in his Mount Vernon yard. The incident occurred in Indiana as police and residents observe caution around the area.

Iowa Pilot Rescues Crippled Plane After 1000-Mile Flight

Maj. Samuel Tyson of Council Bluffs Iowa piloted a four engine Boeing C97 for nearly six hours with only two engines and 30 minutes of fuel left and landed safely at Hilo Hawaiis Lyman Airport. Tyson praised passengers for their calm under extreme stress and authorities will recommend a Distinguished Flying Cross. The aircraft carried 67 people including 10 women dependents and two babies.

Mrs Glen Ayers Dies In Columbus Junction

Mrs Glen W Ayers 63 died at her home in Columbus Junction August 8 1957. Born January 8 1895 to Peter F Warner and Louie Manley, she married Glen W Ayers October 14 1915. She was active in the Methodist Church and Eastern Star. Survived by husband two sons Edward and Robert four daughters Louie Walcott Catherine Wilson Lee Bebb and Thomas Turner all of Columbus Junction 15 grandchildren. Former Richland Resident Della Neville Dies in Wyoming Iowa

Mrs. Della Neville 83 a former Richland resident died this morning in Wyoming Iowa where she had lived the last three years. She was a former Evening Journal correspondent and is survived by a daughter and two grandchildren among other relatives. Born June 26 1874 near Washington she married Clarence Neville in 1901. The Gould Funeral Home Richland is in charge.

Demonstration Teams Compete Monday at County Office

Members of the Washington County 4 H clubs will hold their demonstration team contest at the county extension office in Washington. The contest starts at 2 p.m. Monday. Winners reach the Iowa State Fair for top honors.

Bertha Hits Gulf Coast Shrugs as Hurricane Threat Grows

A Gulf storm named Bertha strengthened to a hurricane and sent tides into the Louisiana Texas coast. Residents fled low-lying areas as the Red Cross opened refugee centers in Lake Charles and nearby cities. Coast Guard rescue teams aided people stranded by high tides near Galveston and San Luis Pass. Weather Bureau warned Bertha threatens west Louisiana and upper Texas coasts from Galveston to Vermilion Bay.

Winners Named in 4-H Demonstration at County Fair

Four-H teams earned top honors in senior and junior divisions. Senior champions are Karen Crawford and Barbara Glassburner of the Cedar Clippers who will go to the state fair. Reserve senior champions are Shirley Bush and Connie Hohenshell of the Gobblerettes. Junior champions are Evelyn Stout and Carole Jungbluth of the Headliners with Sara Knupp and Marilyn Timmins as reserve.
