Roberta Jean Huggins, 25, Los Angeles, angrily refused to sign a speeding ticket on Wednesday and insisted she was not going 75 miles per hour, saying she may have been going 74.
Ribbon cutting marked the opening of new pavement on highways 92 and 1 at the west edge of Washington. Officials including Clarence Gleason and Clinton Moyer spoke as the Washington Municipal Band performed and Queens Anna belle Zeck and Diane Edwards rode in the opening caravan. The project cost near 1 million dollars for 8.16 miles with details on right of way culverts underpass bridges and paving costs allocated to local firms.

Funeral services for Grace Mae Showalter 75 who died at Bolar Nursing Home Washington will be held Friday at 2 pm at Zehr Funeral Home Wayland. Rev Martin Greer will officiate with burial in North Hill Cemetery. Survivors include son Glenn daughter-in-law and granddaughter Glenda all of Harvey. She was born January 8 1881 in Washington County married Peter P Showalter in 1902 who died 1942. She lived in Wayland 53 years and was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church. She had been a patient five weeks prior to death. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Roy Gardner 73 of West Chester died at 11 pm Wednesday in the hospital after a two week illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Friday at Jones Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born July 21, 1885 in Washington County, he was the son of Bruce and Capitoln Brindley Gardner and lived in Washington County all his life. He married Laura Blanche Durst March 2, 1904 in Richmond. she died May 5, 1951. Survivors include five children Mrs Walter Bauer, Mrs James Stancer, Mrs Edgar Stewart of West Chester, Merle Gardner and Bruce Gardner of Des Moines. one brother Harry Gardner of North English. three sisters Mrs W F Flynn, Mrs H D McGugin of Washington, Mrs Loran Palmer of Batavia. eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
