Schools Set to Open in Washington Independent District

The Washington Independent School District plans a staggered start with teachers reporting August 27 and conferences on the 27th and 28th. Students begin with a half day on August 29 and full days on August 30, per the board of education calendar announced by Superintendent M M Schell.

Shebeck Services Held Tuesday In Riverside

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Shebeck were held Tuesday at St Mary’s church in Riverside. The Rev. Omar Kiefer celebrated the requiem high mass and the Rev. Thomas L. Wolfe delivered the sermon and graveside at St. Vincent’s cemetery. Attendees from out of town included Sister Mary Gregory and Sister Mary Benedict of Ottumwa and numerous relatives from Des Moines Chicago Kalona Iowa City Cedar Rapids and Kalona.

Roy Minnis Appointed Assistant Professor in Denver

Roy Minnis longtime Washington High School principal from 1947 to 194 era is studying for his doctorate in education at the University of Iowa this summer. He was appointed assistant professor of adult education at the University of Denver in Denver Colorado according to a letter to M M Schell superintendent of schools.

Judging of girls 4-H exhibits wrapped up at noon as a short awards program proceeded this afternoon. Senior division winners from Washington county named for entry into Des Moines fair, including Elizabeth Stauffer Good Luck club, JoAnne Griener Northernite club, and Julia Skubal Hi-Ores with tied standards. other top placers listed with various fruit, bread and cake entries.

Communists Press for Korea Cease Fire Talks Resumption

The Communists urged immediate resumption of cease-fire discussions and charged the allies with four violations of neutrality pacts. Boy Scouts Promote Ranks In Local Boards

The Washington district Boy Scout Board of Review at the Presbyterian church advanced Leonard Renoux from star to life and Larry Cochran from first class to star. Both are members of Presbyterian troop 32. Board members included Robert Everetts chair, Walt Messer, Paul Shearer, John Lemmon, Don Paul and Charles L. Johnson. At the Methodist church a Court of Honor fur Scoutmaster Tom Carson’s Troop 37 advanced the troop to second class.

Predict Living Cost Will Show Increase During Next Year

Mrs Donald F De Mars sobbed as 11 year old Patricia complained of pains in her legs and arms. Patty joined the other five De Mars children in the contagious disease ward of General hospital. Richard the first stricken was three and taken to hospital eight days ago. Four days later three more were stricken followed by baby David 10 months 10 year old Donald and Shirley 5. Elementary Students To Rent Textbooks

The Washington independent school district will start a textbook rental system for grades one through eight. Students pay semester fees scaled by grade level to cover book costs, with first grade books costing $6 each and lasting about three years.
